Wigan stays up Blackburn relegated

EWOOD PARK (Sporting Alert) — Antolin Alcaraz scored a late goal at Ewood Park to ensured that Wigan will be playing in the Barclays Premier League next season, but the result means that Blackburn were¬†relegated on Monday.

Needing a win to stay in the race for safety, Blackburn battled hard, but Alcaraz’s 87th-minute header broke the deadlock and condemned¬† Steve Kean’s side to Championship football next season.

Keeping his cool after his team scored the late winner, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said it’s still hasn’t hit him as yet.

“It doesn’t seem real as yet, but it was a great results,” Martinez said. “What that means is incredible.

“These players deserved so much credit. They deserve a huge amount of credit.

“Not alot of people had believed that we would be able to survive in December.”

On keeping Blackburn out on the road, Martinez added: “It is so incredible to keep a clean sheet away from home.”

The Spaniard also offered sympathy to his opposing colleague Kean, who had to battle through another set of protests before the game.

“You have feel for a football club like Blackburn,” he said.

Blackburn joined Wolves as the relegated teams.
