Williams, Kvitova amongst winners: Wimbledon Day 2 Women’s Results

Wimbledon, England (Sporting Alert) — Four-time champion Serena Williams and reigning champion Petra Kvitova were amongst the winners in their first round outing at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

After watching her older sister Venus Williams surprisingly crashed out in her first round on the opening day, Serena made her mark at the championships by crushing Czech Republic’s Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 6-4.

Williams felt confident heading into the match and was determined to not slip up again, following her shocking opening-round loss at the French Open last month.

She also admits to wanting to play harder for her sister.

“It always has some sort of an effect,” Serena said. “I always want to play even better if [Venus is] out of the tournament.”

Defending champion Kvitova and the fourth-seeded Kvitova came back after a small rain delay, which lasted for less than five-minutes to defeat Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan 6-4, 6-4.

“It was unbelievable to come back here as the defending champion,” Kvitova said.

“In the beginning I think I was nervous — first match on the grass it’s always difficult to know what you can expect. I had a lot of mistakes and then I tried to play my game and go forward.”

Also winning on day 2 was the second-seeded Victoria Azarenka, who beat American Irina Falconi 6-1, 6-4.
