WACO, TX (Sporting Alert) — Baylor and Iowa recorded wins in the second round of the NIT Tournament on Friday night.
At the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas, No. 2 seed Baylor (20-14) got past third seed Arizona State (22-13) with a close 89-86 win.
Senior guard Pierre Jackson guided the way with 26 points and 16 assists in the victory for the Bears, which trailed 31-29 at half-time.
Carrick Felix scored 23 points and combined with Jahii Carson, who had 20 in tallying 43 of Arizona State’s 86 points in the losing effort.
“Going in, we knew how good Arizona State was,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said.
“We knew what a great game it was going to be, and they shot 46 percent from 3 (point range). Normally when you shoot 46 percent from 3, you’re going to win a lot of games.”
Cory Jefferson had 21 points, six rebounds and three blocks, Brady Heslip added 14 points and Isaiah Austin finished with 13 for Baylor.
In the night’s other game, Iowa eased past Stony Brook 75-63.
Roy Devyn Marble led the Hawkeyes (23-12) with 28 points with Aaron White ending with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Jameel Warney collected 17 points and seven boards to lead the Seawolves (25-8) who were disappointed to have their season coming to an end.
“It’s disappointing we ended our season this way,” Coach Steve Pikiell said.
“It’s the winningest season in our school history. We fought to the end today, but in the end they were better.”
