Australia Book Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 Semi-final Spot

By:Sports Desk Published on: July 16, 2019 5:21 pm Leave a Comment

LIVERPOOL, England — Australia booked semi-finals place in the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 on Tuesday with a 75-25 win over Malawi.

LOWEST WORLD CUP SCORE

The Diamonds continued their free-scoring form in the tournament, as they easily swept aside the Queens, who were restricted to their lowest ever World Cup score.

The Diamonds were in sparkling form again, sweeping aside Malawi 74-25 as the Queens were restricted to their lowest ever World Cup score.

Australia coach Lisa Alexander made a number of changes to her starting line-up as the Diamonds faced their fifth game in five days. Gretel Tippett started at goal attack, Liz Watson at centre and Jamie-Lee Price at wing defence as the holders looked to extend their impressive start to the tournament.

Malawi came into the game off the back of three successive wins, including a hard-fought, 47-43 triumph over Northern Ireland yesterday. Joyce Mvula started on the bench, with Alinafe Kamwala and Sindi Simtowe in the shooting positions for the Queens.

However they were starved of opportunities in a first quarter which highlighted the dynamic nature of the holders’ play. Caitlin Bassett and Gretel Tippett were flawless throughout the first 15 minutes, both shooting at 100% while also producing moments of fantastic interplay to work shooting chances for each other.

AUSTRALIA TOTALLY DOMINATED

Their quality was reflected throughout the court, with the Diamonds first to pounce on anything, harrying Malawi and forcing frequent turnovers of possession as they worked the ball down the court with speed and precision to their shooters, who quickly accumulated a commanding lead – 21-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Jane Chimaliro came off the bench at goal attack at the start of the second quarter, and immediately made an impact as Malawi matched their total from the entire first quarter in the opening minutes of the second.

They traded goals with the Diamonds in the early stages, but despite Tippett recording the Australians’ first unsuccessful attempt on goal in the match two minutes into the second quarter, they didn’t take long to again get a firm grip on proceedings.

The lead stretched out to beyond 30 as the clinical Diamonds displayed their quality all over the court, and exploited the spaces that were starting to appear as the Malawians struggled to keep a lid on the quality and quantity of Australia’s attacks.

By contrast, the injured Mvula was proving to be a big miss in the opposite shooting circle, with the Malawian shooters converting just five of the 12 shooting opportunities they created in the entire first half.

That fifth Malawian goal, scored by Kamwala, drew cheers from the neutrals in the crowd, but it wouldn’t have brought too much comfort to the Queens, who went in at half time trailing 41-5.

Alexander elected to make changes in both shooting positions for the third quarter, with Caitlin Thwaites and Steph Wood coming on. Any question of those changes disrupting the Diamonds’ rhythm were soon quashed though, as the pairing picked up exactly where their team-mates had left off in front of goal.

At the other end though, Malawi were far better, and their shooting combination of Simtowe and Chimaliro began to find the net with regularity as they benefited from more fluid movement and build-up play.

In what was a quarter of two halves, the score had moved competitively along to 54-13 before an excellent interception by Sarah Klau triggered another period of Australian dominance.

Wood and Thwaites continued to link up well as the Diamonds produced yet more brilliance, with both replacement shooters at 100% as the third quarter ended 61-14.

The crowd-pleasing Malawian revival continued into the fourth quarter however, as an even opening few minutes culminated in the Queens turning possession over and converting their opportunity to lead in a quarter for the first time in the match.

Thwaites and Wood were relentless though, both continuing their 100% record in front of goal as the lead stretched out to 50 for the first time, at 70-20 midway through the final quarter.

The Queens didn’t let that margin grow, and delighted the neutrals in the crowd by finishing with a flourish, scoring the last two goals of the game, which ended 74-25.

The win moves Australia on to eight points, level at the top of Group F with New Zealand. The two nations meet on Thursday morning, in the game which will decide the group winners.

Australia’s Steph Wood said:

“Our first half was really strong, then Malawi came out in that second half and did a few things differently. I think we adjusted pretty well, and now we’ll go back and prepare for New Zealand.”

England Hand Jamaica Back-to-Back Defeats: Vitality Netball World Cup Groups

By:Sports Desk Published on: July 15, 2019 7:39 pm Leave a Comment

LIVERPOOL, England — Eboni Usoro-Brown’s 100th England cap was made even more special by the quality of performance the Roses put in to defeat Jamaica today, she says.

England Hand Jamaica Another Setback

Usoro-Brown reached her century of international appearances as the hosts beat Jamaica 56-48 to edge closer to a Vitality Netball World Cup semi-final spot.

While the milestone was ‘overwhelming’, the 31-year-old says that the performance that she and the Roses produced in front of a packed M&S Bank Arena ensured a truly memorable occasion.

She said: “It was incredibly special out there today. It’s a bit overwhelming to get to 100 caps, but it was just as special as my first, and what a team performance out there tonight.

“We built across each of the four quarters and I’m so happy we came away with the result today.

“In Jade Clarke’s 150th game she won the Commonwealth Games gold medal, so we have a thing in the England team for having big matches on our milestone caps! I think today – never mind it being my 100th – we wanted to come out and play well.

“We saw Jamaica play against South Africa last night and we knew they were going to come for us, so it’s really pleasing to build confidence, belief and the consistency.”

Good Crowd Support

England were again roared on by a capacity crowd, and Usoro-Brown says that the support for the Roses is driving Tracey Neville’s team on.

She added: “I’m absolutely loving it. We were in the fan park yesterday signing autographs and everyone is behind us. We’re so humbled by it.

“Everyone in the crowd today was roaring and cheering, and my social media has been off the chain, so thank you so much to the fans. They’re definitely our 13th player, and hopefully that continues.”

England Eased To 70-34 Win Over Scotland: Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 – Day 2

By:Sports Desk Published on: July 13, 2019 12:35 pm Leave a Comment

LIVERPOOL — A sell-out crowd at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena watched on as Scotland 70-34 made it two wins from two at the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019, beating Scotland 70-34.

England coach Tracey Neville chose to rotate her squad; Jo Harten, Geva Mentor and captain Serena Guthrie were all named on the sub’s bench from the start.

By contrast, Gail Parata – Neville’s counterpart for Scotland – selected an unchanged starting seven, keeping faith with the players who had earned their opening-day win over Samoa.

England started positively, as a first-minute interception by Jade Clarke led to Rachel Dunn slotting home.  The goal shooter then added four goals in quick succession to give the Roses a 5-1 lead.

After a nervy start though, Scotland rallied to bring the score to 9-6. As they stretched away again though, England were dealt a blow when Layla Guscoth limped off in the closing stages of the first quarter – a quarter which England ended 18-9 ahead.

Housby opened the scoring in the second quarter, before attacking partner Dunn then kept up her 100% accuracy. Scotland’s Bethan Goodwin was starting to find her range after a wayward first quarter, however England continued to benefit from some loose Scotland passing to extend the scoreline to 25-13.

The crowd lapped up a stunning pass from Dunn, who then finished the move by netting her 17th goal. Following another intercepted Claire Maxwell pass, Housby was then able to extend the Roses’ lead to 13 goals.

It was deep into the second quarter when Dunn registered her first missed attempt, however it mattered not to the partisan crowd, as England went in at half time 35-20 in front.

For the second half, Neville made several positional changes, bringing on Chelsea Pitman, Natalie Haythornwaite and Guthrie.  The latter was straight into her stride, with a trademark interception setting up Dunn’s 29th goal of the game.

Scotland took their turn to make some substitutions, with Maxwell not having the impact she would have hoped for. Dunn’s reach and ability to find space meant that she was still excelling in the shooting circle, and her buzzer beater took the third quarter score to 55-26.

  • Defending Champs Australia Crushed Zimbabwe, 73-37: Vitality Netball World Cup

In the fourth, Scotland ceded possession from their initial centre pass; the desire of the England defenders for the ball, as so often, proving decisive. Goal number 40 for Dunn extended England’s lead to almost 30, however Lynsey Gallagher’s 92% shooting accuracy was keeping the scoreboard ticking for the Thistles.

Fittingly though, Dunn was in the action right up until the end, finishing with 49 of England’s 70 goals, from her 52 attempts.

England’s Jo Harten said:

“I think it was a pretty clinical performance in the end – maybe patchy in parts, but that’s what you get in a World Cup, when you’re backing up day after day. We’re pleased with how we pulled up from a really physical game against Uganda yesterday and onwards and upwards for Samoa tomorrow.”

Scotland’s Emily Nicholl said:

“I think it was a tough game but it’s a really good test for us ahead of Uganda. Tough, but we’re proud of what we put out there. We set targets before the match and we feel that we hit most of them, so we’re on track and we’re looking forward to the rest of the competition now.”

By:OMAR HALL Published on: July 15, 2018 2:06 pm Leave a Comment

MOSCOW, Russia — France beat Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Final in Moscow to win the prestigious tournament for the second time in the nation’s history.

Goals from Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and an own-goal by Mario Mandzukic secured the title for Didier Deschamps’ side, while Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic were the goalscorers for the first-time World Cup finalists.

France went in front in the 18th minute when a free-kick by Griezmann was deflected off the head of Mandzukic past his own goalkeeper Danijel Subasic.

Croatia drew level in the 28th minute when Perisic blasted home a left-footed strike past France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

However, France took the lead right back after Argentine referee Nestor Pitana used a video review to award a penalty to the French side after a replay showed that Perisic handled the ball in the area.

Griezmann stepped up to convert the spot kick to put France 2-1 in front in the 38th minute.

Following a brief second-half pitch invasion around the 52nd minute, France quickly put the game beyond reach with two strikes to make it 4-1.

Pogba and Kylian Mbappe netted in the 59th and 65th minutes to give their team a comfortable lead before Mandzukic pulled one back for the Croatians in the 69th, following a shocking mistake from Lloris.

“After the fourth goal came in, I started thinking it would be difficult to come from behind for the fourth or fifth time,” Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said.

After Mandzukic pulled another back, “I started hoping again, but it is very difficult to come back against opposition as difficult as France.”

France was winning its second World Cup title, following the 1998 crown.
