BOSTON (Sporting Alert) — Top ten results from the 2014 Boston Marathon, which took place on Easter Monday, April 21. The annual event saw Rita Jeptoo of Kenya successfully defended the women’s title and American Meb Keflezighi taking the men’s race.

Jeptoo, who broke away from a group of five runners at the 23-mile mark, keep her pace steadily throughout the closing miles of the race on her way to setting a new course-record of 2 hours, 18 minutes, 57 seconds.

The Kenyan, who said she never got the chance to enjoy last year’s victory, following the fatal finish line bombings, also won in 2006 and she joined a list that included six other runners to have won the Boston Marathon three-times.

“I came here to support the people in Boston and show them that we are here together,” Jeptoo said. “I decided to support them and show them we are here together.”

Runners up Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia, ran 2:20:35, while third place went to campatriot Mare Dibaba, in 2:20:35.

The top American finisher was Shalane Flanagan and she was seventh after leading for more than half the race before falling behind the lead pack with about five-miles to go.

She did go on to run 2:22:02.

In the men’s race, American Keflezighi took the gamble of going out early and then held on to finish in a time of 2:08:37 and became the first USA men runner to win the race since Greg Meyer in 1983.

Kenya’s Wilson Chebet closed the gap during the final stages of the race, but his surges on his chase of Keflezighi took  a lot out of him and he ran out of gas.

Still, he came home second in 2:08:48, holding off fellow Kenyan Frankline Chepkwony, who ran 2:08:50.
