2016 US Open Round 2 Scores and Results: Day 4

NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Scores and results from the 2016 US Open Women’s and Men’s Singles Round 2 matches on Thursday, Sept 1.

On the women’s side, the day belonged to the seeded players, with No. 1 Serena Williams, No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 5 Simona Halep and No. 6 Venus Williams leading the way.

American world number one and top-seed Serena crushed compatriot Vania King 6-3 6-3 to advance to round 3 of the tournament and stay on course to win a record 23rd grand slam title.

She will next face Sweden’s Johanna Larsson, who easily took care of Czech Republic’s Denisa Allertova in her round 2 match.

In-form Halep of Romania continued her impressive form this summer by knocking off Lucie Safarova from the Czech Republic 6-3 6-4 to secure a place into the third round.

Next up for Halep is a clash with No. 31 Timea Babos of Hungary.

In other results, No. 4 Radwanska of Poland ended the run of Great Britain’s Naomi Broady with a 7-6(9) 6-3 result, while No. 6 Venus Williams of USA beat Germany’s Julia Goerges 6-2 6-3 to progress to round 3.

The 10th seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova beat Montserrat Gonzalez (Paraguay) 6-1 7-5 to join the advancing party as well, with No. 11 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain beating Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-1 6-4 in her round 2 contest.

On the men’s side at the 2016 US Open, Andy Murray led the way with another workout performance.

The British world No. 2 beat Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-4 6-1 6-4 to roll into round 3 in confident mood, as he gears up to face Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi, who upset No. 30 Gilles Simon of France 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-7(1) 7-6(3) in his battle.

Another US Open title contender Stan Wawrinka rallied to earn his place in round 3 as well.

The Switzerland star recovered from being down 5-2 against Italy’s Alessandro Giannessi in the second set to clinch it 7-6 and then went on to win the match 6-1 7-6(4) 7-5.

Other notable players progressing to the third round were Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina who beat No. 19 Steve Johnson of USA 7-6(5) 6-3 6-2, No. 6 Kei Nishikori of Japan who defeated Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 and Austrian No. 8 Dominic Thiem, who beat Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6-4 6-3 6-2.
