DURHAM, N.C. — NC State survived a Duke comeback to win 8-7 in 11 innings on Tuesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park as the 2023 ACC Baseball Tournament continues. Box Score
The Wolfpack (35-18) jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first three innings, but the Blue Devils (35-20) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. NC State finally broke the tie in the top of the 11th inning on an RBI single by Cannon Peebles.
LuJames Groover III hit a two-run home run and Kalae Harrison had two doubles for NC State. Logan Whitaker (5-3) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
Tyler Albright had three hits and two RBIs for Duke. Jimmy Romano (1-1) took the loss.
The win keeps NC State’s hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament alive. The Wolfpack will face fourth-seeded Miami on Thursday night. Duke will face the Hurricanes on Friday night.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from start to finish. NC State took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Groover III and a two-run double by Harrison.
Duke got one run back in the bottom of the inning, but NC State added three more runs in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead.
The Blue Devils rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Albright hit a two-run single to cut the lead to 7-5. With two outs, MJ Metz hit a solo home run to tie the game at 7-7.
NC State finally broke the tie in the top of the 11th inning. Peebles led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Jacob Cozart.
