CONWAY – NCAA Division I College World Series defending champion Coastal Carolina released its 2017 schedule last month as the Chanticleers aim to repeat their success from last season.
Coastal Carolina, which opens the new season with the 18th annual Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach from February 17-20, will play 34 home games, one less than last year when it went 28-7 at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The schedule released by head coach Gary Gilmore will also see the Chanticleers taking on 16 teams that finished among the NCAA top 100 in the RPI.
Included on the fixtures this term are games against Western Carolina, St. John’s, North Carolina A&T and James Madison, the release revealed.
The College World Series champion will be recognised for the 2016 success with a ring ceremony and celebration on Feb. 18 prior to the home game against Western Carolina at 2 pm.
“I was speechless when we returned from Omaha to see the thousands of fans waiting for us at the airport,” Gilmore said on the school’s official program website.
“I was also blown away with the tremendous crowds that showed up for the parade through Conway and the reception at Springs Brooks Stadium the following day.
“This year’s opening weekend, and the Western Carolina game, in particular, will be a major stepping stone as we continue to build this program to consistently stay at the elite level.
“It is my sincerest hope that we pack Springs Brooks Stadium to the limit to make a statement nationally in defence of our national championship while celebrating last year’s team for the pride they brought to this University, community and state.”
Other notable games on the home schedule include dates with Illinois and rivals College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington.
The Sun Belt conference series with Arkansas State, NCAA Regional host Louisiana Lafayette, Georgia Southern, Troy and Appalachian State are other key fixtures.
