College Baseball Regional Scores on May 30
MAY 31 -- Scores and results from Saturday's NCAA College Baseball Regional games around the country.
Maryland, LSU, Louisville and Florida all scored victories on the day, while several clubs, including Oral Roberts, Lehigh and Clemson, were all eliminated from the NCAA tournament.
The highlighted shock of the day came at Jackie Robinson Stadium, where Maryland dropped UCLA 4-1 in their Los Angeles Regional fixture to put the top-seeded Bruins (43-15) in a spot of bother heading into Sunday's elimination game with CSU Bakersfield.
Defeat means the No. 1 club, who had its postseason win-streak at 11 games snapped, now needs to register three straight victories to win their regional, but would still need to beat Maryland (41-21) twice to achieve that feat.
The Terrapins, who have their eyes well set on booking a place in the Super Regional, doesn't seem too surprised about being in the driver's seat.
They have been preparing "all year for postseason."
"I just think we prepare all year for postseason, from the way we do our scouting reports to the way we practice," Terrapins associate coach Jim Belanger said on the school's website.
"Everything we do is to prepare for postseason, and once we get to the postseason nothing changes.
"Every day we prepare, from the time they show up on campus for practice, we’re preparing to have success in the postseason."
LSU, led by another outstanding performance from SEC Freshman of the Year Alex Lange (11-0), secured a 2-0 victory over UNC Wilmington at Baton Rouge Regional at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
"Alex Lange showed why he's a first-team all-American, first team all SEC, freshman of the year in the SEC, should be national freshman of the year, might be national pitcher of the year, and he doesn't care at all about those kind of things," LSU coach Paul Mainieri said on the team's website.
The Tigers (50-10), who firmly have the World Series in their sights, now await the winner of the Sunday's elimination game between Tulane and UNC Wilmington.
Meanwhile, there were wins as well for campus sites hosts Louisville and Florida.
In the Gainesville Regional at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium, The Gators eased to an 8-2 win over South Florida to move within a win of progressing to the Super Regional, while Louisville edged past Michigan 4-3 in the Louisville Regional.
