BATON ROUGE, Sporting Alert — The following is the latest scores from the NCAA College Baseball Regionals, as more teams punched tickets to the 2017 Super Regionals on Sunday.
Five other ball clubs, including the NCAA tournament No. 1 overall seed Oregon State, joined Cal State Fullerton in the Super Regionals field this week after successfully navigating through their respective regional tournaments.
Besides the Beavers, LSU, Louisville, Wake Forest and the surprise package so far at this year’s tournament, Davidson, also moved on to the next stage.
Oregon State secured passage into the Super Regionals after crushing all its opponents in the Corvallis Regional at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The national top-seed closed out the tournament on Sunday with a commanding 8-1 victory over No. 3 Yale, which saw it swept the three postseason games at Goss Stadium and improved to 52-4 overall on the season.
The Beavers, who used a mixture of offense and outstanding pitching, combined to outscore their opponents 27-3 across the three games.
They will now face either Clemson or Vanderbilt in a best-of-three Super Regional series.
Another very impressive performance over the weekend came from the No. 4 nationally ranked team, LSU, which won its 23rd NCAA Regional title Sunday night, with a 5-0 result over Rice in the Baton Rouge Regional at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
The positive outcome also saw the Tigers winning 14-straight and will now take on either Southern Miss or Mississippi State in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series at home later this week.
“We’re excited about moving on to the next step which will begin next weekend at the Super Regional,” a delightful LSU head Coach Paul Mainieri said.
“We’re three games down with two to get to Omaha (for the World Series). When you start the NCAA Tournament, it takes five (games).
“We’re three-fifths of the way there, and I think you’re going to see a team come out next weekend that’s going to play nice and loose, aggressive and confident.
“Hopefully, we’ll have some success next weekend and be able to go on to Omaha after that,” he added.
Meanwhile, the most surprising result on Sunday came at Boshamer Stadium where No. 4 regional seed Davidson stifled No. 1 seed North Carolina’s offense in the final inning to lift the Chapel Hill Regional.
The Wildcats, who stunned the No. 2 national seed 8-4 in the opening round on Friday, squeezed out a nail-biting 2-1 win over the Tar Heels to advance to the Super Regionals.
The 2017 Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions will face either Texas A&M or Houston in a best-of-three Super Regional series.
Elsewhere, Louisville held off Xavier, 8-7 to win Louisville Regional, while Wake Forest finished atop the Winston-Salem Regional after beating No. 2 seed West Virginia, 12-8 on Sunday.
