NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sporting Alert) — Results and box scores from the NCAA college football bowl games that took place on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
In the battle for the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, Notre Dame defeated No. 23 LSU 31-28 with a late field goal, while No. 13 Georgia secured a 37-14 win over No. 21 Louisville in the Belk Bowl.
At LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee, senior kicker Kyle Brindza made a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter to help the Fighting Irish (8-5) sealed the Music City Bowl crown and stopped a four-game losing streak.
“To leave a program so historic like this in this kind of fashion is great,” Brindza told reporters after the game.
“It’s a blessing for me, but also to be able to help win a game for all my teammates is a bigger blessing.”
Meanwhile, LSU’s Leonard Fournette ran almost untouched all game in the defeat.
The freshman running back ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns, and also returned a kickoff 100 yards for another score in the highlighted play of the game.
The Tigers’ (8-5) quarterback Anthony Jennings was 7 of 14 in completed passing for 151 yards and a 75-yard toss to John Diarse for a touchdown, which tied up the scores at 21-21 with 14:46 remaining in the third quarter.
Sophomore running quarterback Malik Zaire was handed his first career start for Notre Dame and he impressed after carrying the ball 22 times for 96 yards and a touchdown — combining with his 12 of 15 passing for 96 yards and another score.
The Irish played with two quarterbacks, as senior Everett Golson also started and went 6 of 11 for 90 yards.
“This was a matchup that we had wanted at Notre Dame, and I know LSU felt the same way,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said.
“We wanted to be challenged. We were disappointed in the way we played obviously at the end of the year, and our guys wanted the opportunity to finish the season the right way.”
In the day’s other bowl game, Nick Chubb rushed 33 times for 269 yards and two touchdowns in guiding Georgia to a dominating 37-14 win over Louisville in the Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
In the meantime, redshirt freshman Kyle Bolin, who made his first career start for Louisville (9-4) was 20 of 40 in passing for 301 yards and one touchdown and two interceptions.
Sophomore running back Brandon Radcliff carried the ball 19 time for 91 yards and a touchdown.
