Canada are taking this opportunity to give some of the younger players the chance to shine on the international stage as the nation look to rebuild for the future, which means the likes of veteran captain and 35-year-old forward Dwayne De Rosario, the country’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 20 goals from 73 international appearances, will not be involved.

Will Johnson will skipper the team in this tournament.

“This is a great opportunity for everyone – and particularly the young players,” Canada head coach Colin Miller said ahead of the game.

“We are looking to build something for the future of our national team.

“I’m happy with the commitment and attitude the players have shown in training. They look hungry to play, which is exciting.”

He added: “We have some good young players in the side but they will have to earn their right to play some minutes in this tournament.

“We are here to compete and win, and that might likely mean that I go with some of the more senior players available to me.”

Martinique, in the meantime, is making its fourth appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, having previously done so in 1993, 2002 and 2003, but will be contesting in the tournament for the first team in a decade.

The nation qualified for this tournament after finishing fourth in the Caribbean Football Union Cup and they are hoping to have a good run at this year’s event.

They acknowledged that Canada will be dangerous and will not crazy for points in the first game.

“A victory in this tournament, it is almost a guarantee of qualification for the quarterfinals,” Martinique coach Patrick Cavelan was quoted as saying.

“The first two of each group will qualify as the two best third, virtually assuring passage in case of victory.

“We’re not going to throw everything into it from the start and risk losing this first match; it can also put chances of qualification in risk.”

Canada dropped its last three friendlies to Japan, Belarus and Costa Rica, but will be searching for a new start against in CONCACAF Gold Cup action. The Canadians have  an all-time record of 1W-2D-0L in clashes against Martinique, dating back to 1993.
