(Sporting Alert) — There were some crazy happenings at The Open Championship on day one at Muirfield on Thursday, but World No. 1 Tiger Woods is satisfied with his personal round display.

The three-time Open champion overcame a sluggish start to end the day with 2-under 69 to trail bed time leader Zach Johnson by three shots.

Woods, who is also in a six-way tie for ninth, was very happy about his opening round effort and he’s well placed to challenge for the lead with a good second day’s effort.

“I really played well,” The American said on Thursday. “I had to grind it out. More than anything it was just trying to hang around par.

“It was tough. I’m very pleased to shoot anything even par or better.

“It was so hard to get the ball close. Very difficult. I tried to keep the ball in front of me as best I could and sink a putt if I could keep it below the hole.

“But it was so difficult to get the ball even below the hole and in the right spot.

“I putted the ball off the green today, and it really wasn’t that bad a putt. Anything that goes four feet by, it’s gone. It’s tough.”

Coming into the contest there were some concerns over a troublesome elbow Woods has, but he revealed he’s feeling no pain from the area that forced him to lay-low since the US Open at Merion last month.

“Elbow held up great,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons I took the break, to make sure that was good. I knew the ground was going to be hard over here.

“That little time off helped. I’ve taken three and four weeks off before Major championships previously, and come back and played well.”

Meanwhile, several players, including the veteran Phil Mickelson, have voiced their disappoints about the course conditions.

“The organisers should let go of their ego and set the course up the way the best players can win,” said Mickelson, after shooting a two under 69.

“… The greens are dying and the holes are on edges of slopes that the ball just simply won’t stay. You drop it, it won’t stay by the hole.”
