LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Arsenal is truly in need of signing another striker in the January transfer window and it is being reported that Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa has emerged as the favourite to move to the London club.
According to Goal.com, the English Premier League leaders are interested in the Brazilian-born Spanish forward as they seek to help eased the pressure off Olivier Giroud.
Arsene Wenger has been linked with a number of players, but it is understood that the Frenchman wants another frontman who is capable of scoring 15-20 goals a season and he feels the free-scoring Costa is the ideal man.
According to the report, Costa, who is under contract at Atletico Madrid until 2018, has a £38 million release clause, a fee Arsenal could be willing to match.
Wenger missed out at signing Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain, who went to Napoli in the summer, as well as Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. Current Atletico Madrid forward David Villa revealed also that Barcelona had blocked his move to the Emirates Stadium last January.
Arsenal apparently will send scouts to watch Costa play this week. He has scored 17 goals in 16 La Liga games thus far this season.
Atletico Madrid currently shares the top spot with Barcelona in the La Liga standings and head coach Diego Simeone is ready to dismiss any bid for the on-form goalscorer.
