At the close, Hales was unbeaten on 71 runs, his second test match half century and his highest innings scored in the five day version of the game as well.

Hales put on 49 runs for the first wicket with his captain Alastair Cook, who fell for just 16.

His half century came from 154 balls and included 12 fours.

In form wicketkeeper batsman Bairstow went to bed on 54 not out – having hit 6 fours and a six and faced 67 deliveries.

Sri Lanka was led with the ball by debutant Dasun Shanaka, who took three-wickets, including the wickets of Joe Root and Nick Compton for ducks.

The other England batsmen back in the stands are debutant James Vince and all-rounder Ben Stokes who hardly troubled the scoreboard.

Shanaka, 24, also removed Cook in the 21st over.

Sri Lanka had won the toss and elected to put England in to the bat and although they failed to get more than five wickets, you’d have to say day one went to the visitors.
