THE FIXTURES

Three AP Top 25 ranked teams will be in action on Friday, including two top five clubs – No. 4 Baylor and No. 5 Michigan State.

After watching fellow Big 12 outfits TCU getting off to a winning start in their fixture on Thursday, Baylor will be hoping to keep tabs on their conference rivals when they face Southern Methodist University (SMU) at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, TX.

Junior quarterback Seth Russell will take over as the ball distributor for the Bears, following the departure of Bryce Petty and all eyes will be on him to see how he will handle the pressure.

Baylor also comes into this contest looking to extend its winning streak of 11 straight meetings with SMU.

In last year’s opener, the Bears hammered the Mustangs 45-0, with Russell, who picked up from Petty after he left the pitch going 13 for 23 for 124 yards and a touchdown.

The Texas-based club will certainly start favourite to win 12 straight, but will have to do without All-American defensive end Shawn Oakman, the Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and safety Orion Stewart, who were both suspended for violating team rules, ESPN reported.

Baylor scored 227 points in its opening four games of the season last year and averaged almost 56 points per game during that period.

SMU finished with a 1-11 record last year and has won just six games in the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, No. 5 Michigan State will open their 2015 college football campaign against Western Michigan at Waldo Stadium.

The Spartans, who established several school records last term on offense, are returning seven of those starters and will be hoping to get off to another flying start.

Michigan State will face No. 7 Oregon in Week 2 of their schedule, just as they did a season ago.

Also in attention on Friday night’s Week 1 fixtures, No. 23 Boise State will take on Washington at Bronco Stadium, Weber State will face PAC12 outfits Oregon State, while Rhode Island and Syracuse will go live on ESPN3.
