SPORTING ALERT – Euro 2016 Qualifiers scores and results from the games that took place on Thursday. World Cup champions Germany were stunned, while Portugal booked its place.
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 1, GERMANY 0
Shane Long scored a 70th minute goal and the Republic of Ireland stunned World champions Germany in a Euro 2016 Group D game at Aviva Stadium on Thursday.
Long, who came on for Daryl Murphy in the 65th minute, picked up a long punt from substitute goalkeeper Darren Randolph and after getting behind the German defence, fired high into the top corner of the net past Manuel Neuer to send the home supporters to their feet.
Randolph came on shortly before the halftime break for veteran keeper Shay Given, who suffered a knee injury.
The win now means Ireland are at least into the playoffs ahead of the final group game in Poland.
SCOTLAND 2, POLAND 2
In the other Group D contest on Thursday, Robert Lewandowski scored the first and last goals to help Poland secure a 2-2 draw in Scotland.
Lewandowski continued his rich goalscoring form this season when he gave Poland the lead in the third minute.
However Matt Ritchie (45) and Steven Fletcher (62) scored to give the hosts a 2-1 lead after the hour man.
But Lewandowski struck again in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to earn a point for the visitors, who stayed second in the Group on goal difference behind Germany.
Poland and Scotland both have 18 points, with Germany which missed the chance to qualify today, still ahead with 19 points.
PORTUGAL 1, DENMARK 0
In Group I, Joao Moutinho scored the only goal in the 66th minute to give Portugal a 1-0 victory over Denmark and a place into the group stages of the Euro 2016 tournament.
The victory means the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portuguese side moved six points clear of the Danes on 18 points and cannot be caught.
Albania missed the chance to join Serbia in Euro 2016 after going down 2-0 to Serbia.
Despite the defeat, Denmark stayed second, but can still lose that spot if Albania win its next game.
NORTHERN IRELAND 3, GREECE 1
The Northern Ireland qualified for Euro 2016 with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Greece to top Group F at Windsor Park.
Steven Davis bagged a brace with goals in the 35th and 58th and Josh Magennis added another in the 49th in the win for the Northern Ireland.
Christos Aravidis pulled a goal back for Greece four-minutes from time, but by then the game was already out of reach.
With the win, Northern Ireland moved to 20 points and to the top of the group standings.
