DURHAM, N.H. — R.J. Eytle-Rock scored a game-winning layup with just under one minute left and Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) picked up a 68-66 victory over New Hampshire in the America East Conference on Sunday.
Both teams battled in a closely contested second half that went down to the final minute of play.
Nick Guadarrama made a pair of free throws to give New Hampshire a 66-65 lead with 1:56 left in the game.
Eytle-Rock Gets UMBC Game Winner
However, Eytle-Rock tied the score at 66-all from the stripe, following a foul by Guadarrama, and then drove from the right side into the lane for a floater with 58.4 seconds left and the bucket turned out to be the game-winner.
Blondeau Tchoukuiengo missed a free throw and a potential game-tying jumper in the closing seconds.
Eytle-Rock finished with a season-high 27 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the floor and Keondre Kennedy added 13 points and five rebounds for the Retrievers (9-2, 5-1 America East Conference).
Brandon Horvath had eight points and eight rebounds and Dimitrije Spasojevic finished with six points and seven rebounds for UMBC, which won two straight to stay second in the conference standings.
Guadarrama shot 11 of 20 from the field and made four 3-pointers on his way to pouring out a career-high 34 points for New Hampshire (4-5, 3-3). He also grabbed six rebounds.
Jayden Martinez added 11 points and seven rebounds and Tayler Mattos had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-5, 3-3), who were losing two straight and three of the last four games.
