PORTLAND, Ore. (November 24) —— Kyle Filipowski had 19 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season as No. 8 Duke survived the challenges from Oregon State to secure a 54-51 win in the opening game of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament on Thursday.
Filipowski also had double-double performances against Jacksonville, South Carolina Upstate and Kansas. He scored eight of Duke’s last 12 points to help the Devils (5-1) hold on for their third win in a row since losing to the defending national champions Jayhawks earlier this month.
Ryan Young also added a double with 11 points and 15 rebounds off the bench and was the only other Blue Devils player to score in double figures today at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Jordan Pope paced Oregon State with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Dexter Akanno made two 3-pointers and scored 11 points for Beavers (3-2) who shot 39.5% from the field and 28.6% from long range.
Duke held a close 29-27 lead at halftime with each team trading big 3-pointers with less than a minute to go in the period. Akanno hit one with 54 seconds remaining to give the Beavers a 27-26 lead, but Duke answered back through Jeremy Roach, who connected on a 3-pointer at the other end with 22 seconds left to give the Blue Devils a two-point lead at the break.
Oregon State opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead, but Duke stayed close throughout the contest before taking over for the win.
Duke shot 16 of 60 from the field, missed 24 of the 29 attempts from 3-point range, while outrebounding Oregon State 45-29.
