Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton edged closer to lifting another Formula One world title after flashing to victory at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.

The British No. 1 who started the day in pole position, went all the way to celebrating another win this season as he moved closer to claiming a third F1 crown.

Hamilton covered the 53 lap race in a time of 1:18:00.688 and finished ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Williams driver Felipe Massa, who crossed the line in second and third, respectively.

Nico Rosberg was forced to retire from the race after his engine blew up with just two laps remaining, and he watched his teammate Hamilton extended his lead in the Formula One Drivers’ Championship points standings.

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso also failed to finish the race after he was forced to stop because of technical issues on lap 50.

Messa’s Williams’ teammate Valtteri Bottas was fourth with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completing the top five finishers on the day.

Sunday’s victory saw Hamilton extending his lead to 53 points over Rosberg in the race for the driver’s title.

The 30-year-old sits at the top on 252 points, with Rosberg second on 199pts.

Third place is being held by Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari with 178pts, while the top five is covered by Williams’ Felipe Massa (97pts) and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen (92pts).

Mercedes continues to race away with the team title as it sits in pole position with 451 points, way ahead of Ferrari (270) who are 181pts behind and Williams (188) – 263pts adrift of Mercedes.
