[Highlights] BYU Upsets No. 18 San Diego 72-62, Barcello scores 22 points

SAN DIEGO — Alex Barcello scored 22 points and BYU used a late run to secure a 72-62 upset victory over No. 18 San Diego State on Friday night.

Barcello’s balanced evening included 7-of-11 shooting from the field with two 3-pointers and he also added seven rebounds and seven assists.

Matt Haarms had 10 points and eight assists and Brandon Averette scored 10 points, including a big 3-pointer with 51 seconds left that put BYU up by four points.

Matt Mitchell ended with a career-high 35 points to lead San Diego State (5-1) which was suffering its first loss of the season.

Mitchell went 12-of-17 on shooting with five 3-pointers in the defeat for the Aztecs.

Barcello made four free throws in the last 35 seconds, sandwiched around a missed 3 by Mitchell, and Connor Harding made two free throws

Haarms hit a baseline jumper to put BYU in front 63-61 BYU lead before Mitchell cut it to one point when he made one of two free throws.

Averette then hit a 3-pointer to the Cougars (7-2) up 66-62 with 51 seconds left before Barcello made four free throws in the last 34 seconds and Connor Harding made two more to finish off the game.
