Haiti comes into Monday night’s contest full of confidence on the back of a 2-2  a draw with European giants Italy last month.  Prior to that result, the Haitians fellow to a narrow 2-1 defeat to world champions and world no. 1 Spain in Miami.

“I know people are excited and impressed with our play recently, especially against Italy, but I tell the guys and the people that they were just friendlies and what we want to achieve for Haitian football is bigger than that,” Blake Cantero told CONCACAF.com.

“We want to be competitive at tournaments such as this (the Gold Cup) and continue to rise to a high standard of football.”

Despite its good showing against some very highly ranked oppositions, Cantero has called on his team to remain focused and make a push for a respectable Gold Cup place.

Midfielder Jean-Marc Alexandre has also called for concentration.

“It is a good feeling to see so many people happy,” commented the midfielder/forward.  “But whatever we have done so far and hope to do at this Gold Cup, we play for the people of Haiti and carry them with us.”

Still on the path to qualify for 2014 World Cup finals, Honduras, in the meantime, come into Gold Cup without several key players, including goalkeeper Noel Valladares, who is out injured.

“(Goalkeeper) Noel (Valladares) is not here right now, nor is (goalkeeper) Donis (Escober) and some of our midfielders got injured during the month of June,” head coach Luis Fernando Suarez.

“But I am happy with what the midfielders who have been called up are doing at practice.”
