MANCHESTER – Gabriel Jesus netted a brace and Manchester City eased past Everton 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium to return to the summit of the English Premier League standings on Saturday.
With Sergio Aguero returning from injury and looking on from the bench, Jesus opened the scoring for the Citizens when he brilliantly executed a low shot under Jordan Pickford in the 22nd minute, following a pass from Leroy Sane.
It was the Brazilian’s first goal in 12 appearances.
Manchester City went further ahead in the 50th minute when Jesus headed home from close range from another well-weighted cross from Sane.
Everton pulled a goal back in the 65th minute from a Dominic Calvert-Lewin header, which deflected off Manchester City defender Fabian Delph, but super-sub Raheem Sterling used his first touch of the game to restore the two-goal padding with a header from close range.
The win sees Manchester City going two points clear of Liverpool at the top of the English Premier League standings.
The Reds play at home against Manchester United on Sunday.
