LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United have overtaken Arsenal as the new favourites to sign goalkeeper Petr Cech as David de Gea looks all set to leave Old Trafford.
Cech has seen his playing time reduced significantly since the arrival of Thibaut Courtois, who has cemented himself as the club’s new No. 1, and the experienced keeper is ready to leave Chelsea.
The Gunners had been the front-runners to lead the want-away shot-stopper, but the latest odds from Sky Bet is now indicating that the Czech Republic veteran could be on his way to Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal is hoping to keep a hold of Real Madrid target, De Gea, but the Spanish giants are determined to get their man and it looks like the 24-year-old is also looking to leave.
This means Van Gaal must find a proper replacement for the club’s recently voted Player of the Year.
Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris had been taunted as the ideal talent, but according to the bookmakers, it’s Cech who the Red Devils want.
Manchester United are now the 1/1 favourites to sign the 33-year-old, with Arsenal having odds of 13/8 to sign him this summer.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain are at 5/1 to secure Cech’s signature in the summer, with his current club Chelsea, being backed 16/1 to convince him to stay.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been side-stepping questions about his interest in signing Cech before the transfer window ends — repeatedly saying he is happy with both David Ospina and Wojciech Szczęsny as his No. 1 options.
However, sources close to him are saying the Frenchman remains doubtful over the pair and would rather sign someone who he knows will definitely be his first-choice.
In the meantime, bookmakers are not ruling out any dramatic twist before the transfer window closes in September, with Cech also being linked to Real Madrid.
Should the La Liga club some how fail in their bid to bring De Gea to the Santiago Bernabeu, Cech is another option, according to the bookies, but is only listed at 12/1.
Liverpool and Roma both have odds of 20/1, with the latter capable of offering Cech Champions League football for next season.
At the same time though, the player has expressed that he would rather to stay in the Premier League.
