PERTH, Australia, Sporting Alert — Manchester United got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start after registering a 2-0 victory over Perth Glory at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
Man United Had To Wait For Goals
Second half goals from Marcus Rashford and James Garner sealed the win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, which struggled to break down the home team in the first half.
Rashford, a halftime substitute, following 11 changes by Solskjaer for the second half, broke the deadlock an hour into the contest with first-time volley off a backheel from Paul Pogba inside the box.
Commenting on Rashford’s instinctive finish, Solskjaer said: “I’m very pleased with the goal he scored. It was instinctive. He swivels and finishes.
“It’s not one of those pretty goals, but it’s a goal that I’ve said that Marcus needs to add to his tally, because he scores wonder goals but when he can get five of these a season, hopefully he can get some like it in the league as well, he’ll add to his tally.”
Substitute Garner, who replaced Luke Shaw in the 83rd minute, wrapped up the win with a 20-yard drive five two minutes after entering the pitch.
“It’s great for James,” said the manager about Garner’s goal. “We’d just had a corner kick and I said to him: ‘get on the edge of the box and score with your first touch’, but I think he had two, so I wasn’t happy with that one! It was a fantastic strike, the boy can play and he’s enjoying tonight.”

James, Wan-Bissaka Make Debuts
Solskjaer handed debuts to summer recruits Daniel James, who started the game and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who came on at halftime.
Both signings impressed.
“James is sharp and he started well,” said Solskjaer on Manchester United official website at www.manutd.com. “It was a good start for him and we’ll nurture him and he’ll be exciting to watch for many, many games I think.”
United remain in Perth ahead of their second pre-season match against Leeds at the same stadium on July 17, before embarking on the south-east Asian leg of their tour.
Star midfielder Pogba started the game on the bench, while striker Romelu Lukaku, who has been linked with a move to Serie A side Inter Milan, watched from the stands.
Manchester United also played without center-backs Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof and goalkeeper Lee Grant who all missed the game, but travelled with the team to Perth.
