Annapolis, MD – Four starters scored in double digits and Navy beat George Washington 78-71 at the 7th-Annual Veterans Classic in a season opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Junior guard John Carter Jr. paced Navy with 17 points and made four three-pointers. Carter also added six rebounds and two steals in the win.
Cam Davis finished with 15 points and seven assists on 7 of 14 shooting from the field, while Richard Njoku and Tyler Nelson each had 12 points for the Midshipmen (1-0), who shot 48.4% from the field and were 43.5% from 3-point range.
Nelson also contributed four assists and three rebounds in the win and Njoku added five boards and two steals for Navy, which made 31 shots on 26 assists.
Meanwhile, James Bishop and Jamison Battle combined to score 40 points in the defeat for George Washington at the Alumni Hall.
Bishop tallied 20 points on 7 of 16 shooting and dished out nine assists, while Battle added 20 points and six rebounds for the Colonials (0-1). Battle also had six turnovers on the day.
Also reaching double figures in scoring for George Washington was Jameer Nelson Jr., who scored 18 points and made 6 of his 10 shots from the field.
The Colonials, who had 14 assists on 25 made baskets, shot 46.2% from the floor, but made just 9 of their 29 attempts from long-range.
With the win on Wednesday, Navy tied the all-time series against George Washington at 21-21. This series has been dormant since the 2010-11 season.
