CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Defending champions Vanderbilt beat Illinois, 4-2 in their rescheduled Super Regional Game 2 clash to punch their ticket to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The matchup was originally slated for Sunday evening, but bad weather forced officials into postponing the game until Monday.
After dominating Game 1 to win by a scoreline of 13-0, the Commodores came from behind on Monday to complete the best-of-three-game sweep at Illinois Field, in Champaign, as Zander Wiel and Dansby Swanson each smashed solo home runs in the win.
Starting pitcher Philip Pfeifer went for 6.2 innings and had four strike-outs.
Vanderbilt, who twice fell behind early, at 1-0 and then 2-1, rallied with runs in the 6th and 7th innings to avoid a possible Game 3.
With the win on Monday, the Commodores now join Virginia, Arkansas, Miami, Florida and LSU in the NCAA College World Series, with two more place up for grabs.
It was the second year in succession and third time in five years, Vanderbilt booked their slot to the World Series and now await on the winner of the Louisville-Cal State Fullerton Louisville Super Regional matchup.
Meanwhile, the Commodores also celebrated with shortstop Dansby Swanson after he was picked first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday, while star pitcher Carson Fulmer, after he was selected No. 8 overall by the Chicago White Sox in the MLB Draft.
In other results on Monday, Cal State Fullerton advances to the College World Series after shocking Louisville in Game 3 of their Super Regional.
David Olmedo-Barrera smashed a home run in the top of the 11th to lift Cal State Fullerton to a 4-3 victory over Louisville and booked a trip to Omaha, in the extra inning victory.
In the Fort Worth Super Regional, TCU needed 16 innings to see-off Texas A&M 5-4 and progress to its second consecutive College World Series.
