BATON ROUGE, La., Sporting Alert – LSU, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina were among the teams that booked places in the NCAA Super Regional round on Tuesday evening.
The LSU Tigers (45-19) rallied from an early deficit to beat Rice, while Coastal Carolina also rallied to defeat NC State and South Carolina topped UNC Wilmington.
In the Alex Box Stadium at Skip Bertman Field, LSU came back from being 2-0 down to score 5 unanswered runs in a 5-2 win over Rice in the Baton Rouge NCAA Baseball Regionals Tuesday evening.
The Tigers, which dropped the previous game and was forced into playing a deciding fixture, were winning for the 17th time in the last 20 games, while the ball club confirmed it was the 21st time they were grabbing a come-from-behind win this season.
With the victory, LSU landed its 22nd NCAA Baseball Regional crown, while advancing to host Coastal Carolina (47-16) in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional this weekend.
Junior left-hander Jared Poche’ (9-4), who pitched six innings of relief, and sophomore first baseman Greg Deichmann, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, were both effective in the win.
“The game turned around when Jared Poche’ entered the game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri on the team’s official website.
“He threw six innings probably about as well as he’s ever thrown. He’s pitched a lot of great games for us, but I don’t know if he’s ever had a more important one and a better one.”
Mainieri added: “Deichmann’s home run was a special moment for everybody and we were glad to be a part of it.”
Meanwhile, LSU’s Super Regional round opponent, Coastal Carolina (47-16) defeated North Carolina State 7-5 to also advance on Tuesday.
The Chanticleers, after losing the first title matchup 8-1 to NC State, resumed their winner-take-all NCAA Raleigh Regional Championship suspended contest trailing from overnight, but battled back to seal the win.
“When people consider us a mid-major to have all the pieces fall into place and with the challenges there are to make it to a super regional and to Omaha you have to have a lot of upperclassmen to lead the way,” Coastal Carolina head coach Gary Gilmore said.
“It’s mainly because of that group of juniors and seniors that have been together for so long. They’ve been the crutch to the whole challenge.”
