Texas women's volleyball loses season opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 1 Texas women’s volleyball dropped the season opener to Long Beach State, 3-1, on Friday at Walter Pyramid. The Longhorns (0-1) will have a quick turnaround and face Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. LIVE STATS | WATCH LIVE

Madisen Skinner led the Longhorns with 16 kills, while Jenna Wenaas had 11 kills in her first match for Texas. Bella Bergmark added five kills and five total blocks.

Keonilei Akana had a team high 11 digs and Emma Halter finished with 10 digs.  

Texas started fast in the first set and jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead before Long Beach stormed back to tie it at 10-all and eventually take a 14-12 lead. The Beach went on to lead by as much five points and took the first set 25-22.

The Longhorns battled back to take the second set, 25-18, and tie the match up at one set apiece. Texas hit .455 in the second set after hitting just .250 in the opening set.

In the third set, Texas trailed early but made a 6-0 run to grab a 12-11 lead. But following that run, Long Beach had a big answer and outscored the Longhorns 14-4 the rest of the way to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth and final set was back-and-forth almost all the way until the end, with the set tied 19-19 before Long Beach closed it out.
