Landry Shamet of Wichita State

LAHAINA, Hawaii, Sporting Alert – Landry Shamet scored 19 points and led three Wichita State starters in double-digit scoring and the No. 6 Shockers picked up an 80-66 victory over Marquette in the Maui Invitational on Tuesday.

Shamet, who shot 7 of 12 from the floor, also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists in 34 minutes.

Connor Frankamp added 13 points, Shaquille Morris scored 11 and Austin Reaves had 10 points and nine rebounds for Wichita State (4-0), which used its strong defense to fend off Marquette to set up a clash with either No. 13 Notre Dame or LSU in Wednesday’s championship game.

Andrew Rowsey finished with 26 points for the Golden Eagles (2-2) and Markus Howard ended with 25 in the defeat, but no other Marquette player scored in double-digits.

As a team, Wichita State shot 54 percent from the floor and dominated the paint with a 44-33 advantage.

The sixth-ranked club also won the rebounding battle 42-25 over Marquette, which was held to just 38 percent on 23 of 61 shooting.

The Big East outfits were 9 for 33 from 3-pointers

“Of those 10 open 3s we missed, we would normally make four of them because we have a good shooting team,” Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said.

“Tonight we didn’t. So that’s why you see the box score looking like it did.”

Marquette will take on the loser of the Notre Dame v LSU loser in the third-place contest on Wednesday.
