MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert – Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is convinced Sergio Ramos had no intentions of joining the English Premier League club this summer.
Ramos was greatly linked with the English Premier League side, but it now looks like he is well set to stay with Real Madrid, following reports that he is set to sign a new deal with the La Liga giants.
It was understood that the Spanish international told the club that he wanted to leave this summer and only wanted to join Manchester United.
AS also reported that the centre-back had also verbally agreed personal deals with Louis van Gaal side if a deal was struck to send him to Old Trafford.
However, Ferdinand, who spent 12 years at Manchester United, believes Ramos was never interested in joining the Red Devils – adding that he was probably using them to secure a new and improved contract at Real Madrid.
“I think Ramos was just up for a new contract with Real Madrid and may have been using United to help him get a better deal,” the former England captain said in The Sun.
Reports in the Spanish media claimed Ramos met with the club’s president Florentino Pérez in China last month to discuss his future and a possible new contract.
And although the Spanish international is yet to put pen to paper on a deal, the signs are there to suggest that negotiations are well in the advanced mode to keep the versatile defender at Santiago Bernabeu.
The continuous reports about Ramos possibly stay in the Spanish capital have left Manchester United fans frustrated.
In addition to that, Red Devils supporters have to deal with hearing van Gaal commenting that he is satisfied with what clearly is an unstable centre-back pair that will certainly be punished in the Premier League this coming season.
Van Gaal says he is happy with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo leading the heart of his defense – but United fans are frustrated with the Dutchman’s stubbornness to bolster one of the weakest positions in his side.
Ramos has been active with Real Madrid all summer is set to continue his normal role for the club during the Audi Cup in Germany on Tuesday.
