Champaign, Ill. (Sporting Alert) – Sunday’s Super Regional Game 2 battle between Vanderbilt and Illinois has been postponed because of weather threat and is now rescheduled for Monday
The game was initially slated for 9 p.m ET on Sunday, but the threat of severe weather in Champaign forced officials moving that time up three hours to a 6 p.m.
Further delays at Illinois Field resulted in another starting time change – prior to officials telling the fans to leave the venue as lightning began to flash.
The forecast called for heavy rains and strong winds in Champaign so officials decided to push the contest back to Monday.
Game time on Monday will be at 4:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Defending champions Vanderbilt lead the best-of-three game series 1-0, this after scoring a 13-0 victory in Game 1 of the series on Saturday night.
The Commodores now need just one more win to advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
At last year’s World Series, Vanderbilt beat Virginia 3-2 to win the club’s first-ever baseball national championship.
No. 6 Illinois will seek to force a Game 3, although a date for that fixture hasn’t been set.
Meanwhile, in the games that were played on Sunday, LSU and Arkansas also booked College World Series spots with Game 2 wins.
The No. 2 national seed Tigers, behind another impressive performance from left-handed pitcher Jared Poche’ (9-1), beat Louisiana-Lafayette 6-3 at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field to sweep the Baton Rouge Super Regional and advance to Omaha.
Arkansas sealed their place to the College World Series as well with a 3-2 victory over No. 8 national seed Missouri State in Game 3 of the Fayetteville Super Regional at Baum Stadium.
In fact, the Razorbacks scored all three runs in the first inning and then held on for the win to earned an eighth trip to the World Series in club history.
Elsewhere, No. 3 national seed Louisville avoided elimination by scoring a 9-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the second game of the Louisville Super Regional.
The decisive Game 3 at Jim Patterson Stadium will be played on Monday.
Texas A&M also forced a decisive Game 3 and side-stepped elimination with a 2-1 victory over TCU in the Fort Worth Super Regional.
