BOSTON, Sporting Alert — Watch Isaiah Thomas lead the Boston Celtics with a very heavy heart against the Chicago Bulls in Game 1 of the NBA playoff first-round series, live on TNT Overtime on Sunday.
An emotional Thomas enters the game hoping to find comfort on the court after learning about the death of his sister, Chyna Thomas, early Saturday morning.
Before the game, the Celtics observed a moment of silence.
The 28-year-old was introduced later as part of the starting lineup, and the crowd inside the TD Garden roared with deafening cheers in support of their All-Star point guard.
He was spotted on the bench being consoled by teammate and good friend Avery Bradley.
Thomas clearly wasn’t in his typical bouncy mood tonight, as he just walked to the middle with his teammates surrounding him.
Thomas, who is averaging a career-high 28.9 points per game this season, averaged 24.8 points against the Bulls this regular season.
Before Game 1 in Boston, an emotional Gerald Green commented on Thomas, noting that he intends to play every minute of this NBA playoff campaign for “one of my closest friends.”
“It’s one of those things where it’s a tragedy, man. I don’t even know how to say it,” said Green.
“It’s just something we’re going to have to just get through. It is one of my closest friends in the league and I’m here for him. It’s definitely gonna motivate me to get through this postseason.
“I’m playing this postseason for him, man. I really am. Everything I do. I’m laying it all on the line for him, because I know he’s here today through a tough time.
“A lot of guys probably wouldn’t even have done that, and he’s here today. That just shows you what type of man he is.”
