Great Britain’s Andy Murray, the reigning champion, enters Wimbledon 2017 as the No. 1 seed, and he will start the defense of his title against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik on The Centre Court.
Murray, who suffered a shock second-round exit at Queen’s Club and pulled out of two exhibition matches at London’s Hurlingham Club last week, will be hoping to shake off those setbacks as he eyes a third title at SW19.
The Scot, who beat Canada’s Milos Raonic to win Wimbledon 2016, was carrying a hip injury that interrupted his preparation for this year’s tournament, but he confirmed he’s now fully recovered and is ready for action.
“It’s felt much better the last few days,” Murray told a media conference on Sunday.
“If I feel like I do today, I’ll be fine to play the tournament. I’ll be fine to play seven matches.”
Murray added: “I’ve had hip problems since I was very young. It’s not something new to me. It’s just been very sore the last few weeks.
“It was giving me quite a lot of trouble moving to certain shots and getting into certain positions.
“This is an extremely important tournament, so you worry a little bit. It’s a little bit stressful if you can’t practice for a few days.
“You really want to be preparing, training as much as you can to get ready and make you feel better, especially when you hadn’t had any matches.”
Meanwhile, No. 4 Rafael Nadal will get his campaign off against John Millman Australia, on Court One.
Swiss fifth-seed Stan Wawrinka will play Daniil Medvedev of Russia in his opening game on The Center Court, while Croatia’s No. 7 seed Marin Cilic takes on German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
On the women’s side, second-ranked Simona Halep of Romania tackles Marina Erakovic of New Zealand in her first round opener, while No. 6 Johanna Konta of Great Britain faces off against Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh.
Elsewhere, No. 11 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic will open against Johanna Larsson of Sweden on The Centre Court and USA’s 10th seed Venus Williams meets Elise Mertens of Belgium.
ESPN3 live streaming coverage will start at 4 a.m. ET, with The Wimbledon Channel providing the broadcast as well.
Live ESPN3 action on The Centre Court and Court One will start at 8 a.m. ET.
