MELBOURNE (Sporting Alert) — Top seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic were among the seeded players who booked places in the second round on day 2 of the 2015 Australian Open in Melbourne.
Serbian World No. 1 and Four-time title winner Djokovic, who has been under the weather in recent weeks due to a virus — accumulated enough strength to ease to a comfortable 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene.
“For a first round performance it was pretty good,” said Djokovic. “Still need to work on some things. I’m still developing my game so I’m glad to go through.
“It has been a rough two weeks health-wise but I’m getting there.”
Djokovic will next face Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia in the second round.
Also securing a victory on the men’s side on Tuesday was defending champion and fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka, who was an easy 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 winner against Marsel Ilhan of Turkey.
The Swiss will next play Romanian Marius Copil.
On the women’s side, five-time champion Williams wasted little time in dispatching Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 6-0, 6-4.
Two-time winner Victoria Azarenka, who is unseeded after an injury dented her 2014 season, showed that she is ready to battle for another Australian Open crown with a 6-3 6-2 win over American Sloane Stephens.
Azarenka will now face former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.
No. 8 seed Wozniacki secured a 7-6(1) 6-2 positive result over American teenager Taylor Townsend and Dane is bracing for a very tough battle with Azarenka.
“It’s going to be tough, she’s won here before (and) not the easiest on paper,” Wozniacki said about the upcoming date.
“But at the same time… whether you have to beat her in the second round or fourth round, whatever, doesn’t matter if you want to win the tournament.”
In other women’s results fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova beat Richel Hogenkamp, 6-1, 6-4, while sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska had a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 win over Kurumi Nara.
