MELBOURNE, Australia, Sporting Alert – Latest 2018 Australian Open Women’s Singles results from the third-round on Day 5 at Melbourne Park on Friday, Jan. 19.

The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the year.

No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark eased her way to a 6-4 6-3 victory over Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens to book a fourth-round spot.

Unlike her second-round matchup with world No. 119 Jana Fett when she needed to save two match points, Wozniacki made comfortable work of 30th seeded Bertens to wrap up the contest in one hour and 26 minutes under the Rod Laver Arena lights.

“I’m now playing with house money, I have nothing to lose,” said Wozniacki, who was knocked out in the third-round last year.

“At this point I was out of the tournament (in 2017) and on my way home. I got a second chance and I want to take it, to see how far I can go.”

The 27-year-old, still hunting her maiden Grand Slam will face world No. 20 Magdalena Rybarikova in the last 16.

“I end last season strong, I had a great offseason and it’s great to be back here and playing these night session matches, it’s awesome,” added Wozniacki.

“I’ll expect a similar type of match. She has a huge serve and forehand, so I need to be ready for everything.

“I need to be able to change the directions and get deep returns. That will be my focus.”

Elsewhere, No. 4 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine overwhelmed her 15-year-old compatriot Marta Kostyuk 6-2 6-2.

“It’s sad that it was against a Ukrainian girl. That’s always tough,” Svitolina said.

“(Kostyuk) always fights until the end. She has a very bright future and you’re definitely going to hear a lot more about her.”

Rybarikova of Slovakia beat Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5 3-6 6-1 to earn a fourth-round slot as well.

Meanwhile, French Open champion and No. 7 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia was stunned by Estonia’s 32nd-seed Anett Kontaveit.

Kontaveit advanced with a 6-3 1-6 6-3 win over Ostapenko and progressed to the fourth round of a grand slam for the second time.

2018 Australian Open Women’s Singles Results On Day 3: Jan. 17

By:DWAYNE SIMPSON Published on: January 17, 2018 1:43 pm Leave a Comment

MELBOURNE, Australia — Here are the latest Women’s Singles results from the 2018 Australian Open second round matches on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The Australian Open is the first grand slam tournament of the year and there are several players capable of winning this title, which could also determine a new world No. 1.

Top seeds continue to progress through the tournament with the likes of second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, No. 4 Elina Svitolina and No. 7 Jelena Ostapenko leading the way.

Wozniacki saved two match points when she rallied from 5-1 down in the decisive set to beat Croatian Jana Fett 3-6 6-2 7-5 and advanced to the third round of the Australian Open for the second successive season on Wednesday.

The Denmark star who is in her 12th Australian Open campaign, breathe a sigh of relief when finally getting past the 21-year-old Melbourne Park first-timer.

“I was thinking at that point she still has to win four more balls to win this match, and don’t make it easy for her,” Wozniacki said.

“At 5-1, 40-15, I felt like I was one foot out of the tournament. She served a great serve down the T, as well. It was just slightly out. I was kind of lucky.

“Then I felt her tighten up just slightly. I thought to myself, ‘You know what, at this point, make her win it, don’t give it to her’.”

Fourth-seeded Svitolina also moved into the Australian Open third round for the second season in a row after recovering from a shaky start to prevail 4-6 6-2 6-1 over Katerina Siniakova on a very hot Rod Laver Arena.

“I thought I’m gonna melt today,’’ Svitolina said. “It wasn’t easy, and I was struggling today. Hopefully I can recover. Can’t wait for ice bath.”

Siniakova faced some troubling times during the opening period of the contest, but managed to withstand Siniakova’s powerful hitting.

The 23-year-old from Ukraine added: “I thought she was playing great first set. I gave her just one break… It was my kind-of mistake, so hopefully next round I will be more focused.’’

“I’m relieved that I won today. In the end it doesn’t give me the opportunity to play well. I played good tennis in the first match, so you never know. It’s a new day,” she said.

Also advancing to the third round of the tournament was seventh-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia who beat fellow big-hitter Ying-Ying Duan 6-3 3-6 6-4 in second-round.

It’s the second successive Ostapenko, who won the French Open last year, was advancing to the third round of the Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Russian 15th seed, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, was knocked out of the 2018 Australian Open by world number 94 Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine in a 6-2 6-3 second round upset on Hisense Arena.

Also leaving the tournament in the second round was No. 12 seed Julia Goerges of Germany, following her 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Alize Cornet of France.

2016 US Open Quarterfinal Singles Quarterfinal Results

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: September 7, 2016 8:00 am Leave a Comment

NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Latest 2016 US Open results from Men’s and Women’s Singles Quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, September 6.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic advanced on the men’s side with another gift, while the impressive run of the unseeded Caroline Wozniacki as only been extended, as she also eased her way through on the women’s side.

Top-ranked defending champion Djokovic booked his place into the last four on Tuesday when his opponent, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France was forced to retire at the start of the third set with what looked like a left knee problem.

The Serbian, who was gifted a walkover in the second round and a retirement after six games in the third round, was leading the match against Tsonga, 6-3 6-2 on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

“I’m in the semi-finals, so that’s what matters for me the most,” Djokovic told reporters.

“I know Jo for a long time, we grew up playing in the junior circuit as well.

“He’s a fighter, he’s somebody who loves the big stage. This is something I’m sure he didn’t wish for.”

Tsonga, who needed to take a medical timeout during the latter part of the second set, said once he felt the pain in his knee, he knew he couldn’t play on.

“It’s something I had already in the past,” the Frenchman noted.

“When I have my knee, of course, it’s already tough to play against one of the best tennis players.

“But when I don’t have my knee, I have no chance to come back from two sets to love.”

Djokovic will now face another Frenchman in 10th seed Gael Monfils, who beat countryman Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-3 6-3 in his quarterfinal match.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Wozniacki of Denmark blasted past Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova 6-0 6-2 in her 2016 US Open quarterfinal match.

The former world number one came into the tournament unseeded, but it isn’t something she is dwelling on.

“Being 70-something doesn’t really mean much to me,” Wozniacki said.

“I still believe and feel like I’m one of the top players and grinding my way back, so that’s why I’m saying for me right now the ranking is just a number.”

He added: “There is a long way for me right now to get back to number one but I’m doing my best to just play my best tennis and have fun with it.

“It’s really all that I can do right now.”

The Dane will next face No. 2 Angelique Kerber in the semifinals, after the German beat Italy’s Roberta Vinci 7-5 6-0 in her quarterfinal encounter.

Serbian World No. 1 and Four-time title winner Djokovic, who has been under the weather in recent weeks due to a virus — accumulated enough strength to ease to a comfortable 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene.

“For a first round performance it was pretty good,” said Djokovic. “Still need to work on some things. I’m still developing my game so I’m glad to go through.

“It has been a rough two weeks health-wise but I’m getting there.”

Djokovic will next face Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia in the second round.

No. 8 seed Wozniacki secured a 7-6(1) 6-2 positive result over American teenager Taylor Townsend and Dane is bracing for a very tough battle with Azarenka.

No. 1 seed Williams has been in very good form thus far at the tournament, and the American five-time champion is confident she is ready to continue her storming form in New York and secure her third consecutive US Open crown.

Victory for the American on Sunday would see her claiming her 18th Grand Slam title, an achievement that would see her joining Christine “Chris” Evert, who was the last player to win three or more successive US Open titles from 1975-78.

In addition to that, securing an 18th Grand Slam singles title would also see Williams drawing level with Evert and Martina Navratilova for fourth on the all-time list.

At the same time, the top seed faces Wozniacki of Denmark, who enters Sunday’s battle hoping to finally end her long wait for a Grand Slam top honor.

Both players revealed their respect for one another and said that regardless of the outcome, there are plans already pencilled in to have ice cream afterwards.
