DURHAM, N.C., Sporting Alert – Grayson Allen scored 23 points and led four Duke players in double-digit scoring and the Blue Devils rolled to a comfortable 93-60 victory over Division II national champion Northwest Missouri State in an exhibition game on Friday night.
Allen, who was named to the preseason first-team All-American setup, shot 9 of 15 from the floor and made five 3-pointers, while adding five rebounds and three assists in a team-high 26 minutes in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Freshman Marvin Bagley III added 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting and fellow college rookie Gary Trent Jr. bagged 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting for the Blue Devils, who shot 60.6 percent (40-66) from the field.
Another freshman, Wendell Carter ended with 11 points and nine boards, while fellow newcomer and starting point guard Trevon Duval had seven points, five assists and two steals for Duke, which is the USA Today Coaches Poll No. 1 preseason team.
Freshman Ryan Hawkins led Northwest Missouri State with 14 points with Joey Witthus adding 12 and Chris-Ebou Ndow supporting with 10 for the Bearcats, who went 35-1 in Division II a season ago.
However, senior point guard and the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,929 points, Justin Pitts, was held to just seven points on the night.
Pitts went 3 of 14 from the floor and had four assists and three steals.
Duke outrebounded Northwest Missouri State 48-21.
Bearcats was 22 of 70 for 31.4 percent.
