DURHAM, NC, Sporting Alert — Talented freshman Marvin Bagley III began his Duke career with a bang as the No. 1 Blue Devils routed Elon 97-68 in their season opener in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Friday night.
Bagley III had 25 points to set a Duke record for points scored by a freshman in season opener, eclipsing the previous mark of 23, which was set by Shavlik Randolph in 2002.
The nation’s top recruit in the ESPN 100, shot 12 of 18 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds in 29 minutes for the Blue Devils, who improved its NCAA-best non-conference home winning streak to 133 games.
Bagley III scored 15 of his points in the second half on an impressive 7 of 8 shooting.
“We’ve been working in the summer, practicing and going in the weight room, we were doing all this stuff for this night right here,” Bagley III said.
“To come out and show the world what we can do with this great team we have. We just have fun, man, we share the ball well, we come out in attack mode.”
Senior guard Grayson Allen added 22 points and made six 3-pointers, while freshman Gary Trent Jr. hit four 3s to end with 17 points and six rebounds in the win.
Trevon Duval, Wendell Carter Jr. and Alex O’Connell all chipped in with eight points for Duke, which jumped out to a 20-3 lead and led by as many as 35 points in the second half.
Dmitri Thompson scored 13 points, while Dainan Swoope and Tyler Seibring had 11 points each for Elon, which never recovered from its horrific start.
The Blue Devils shot 44 percent in the first half and went into the break with a commanding 45-25 lead.
Duke also scored the opening nine points at the start of the second half to extend its advantage to 29 points early in the perios
The nation’s top-ranked team led 71-41 midway through the second half and 89-54 with 5:17 remaining before removing the starters and cruised home and handed coach Mike Krzyzewski his 999th career victory at Duke.
The Blue Devils host Utah Valley on Saturday night, while the Elon Phoenix will entertain William Peace on Saturday night as well.
