All the big boys secured wins, except for No. 17 Wisconsin, which was stunned by a team picked to finish last in the Summit League, Western Illinois in Madison.
J.C. Fuller scored 20 points and Garrett Covington added 16, including two free throws with 10.2 seconds left to guide the Leathernecks to the win.
Jabari Sandifer had 12 points and seven rebounds in the triumph for Western Illinois, which led by as many as eight points midway through the second half.
Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes each had 17 points for the Badgers in the defeat.
Vitto Brown scored 11 points for Wisconsin, which were beaten by Duke in last season’s National Championship game.
NO. 1 NORTH CAROLINA 91, TEMPLE 67
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Kennedy Meeks collected 25 points and 11 rebounds and No. 1 North Carolina opened its season with a 91-67 win over Temple.
The top-ranked Tar Heels shot 58.3 percent from three-point range and 50.7 percent from the field overall.
Senior forward Brice Johnson added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Noth Carolina, with Nate Britt scoring 15 points and Joel Berry II ending with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists in the victory.
Devin Coleman led Temple in the defeat with 19 points.
NO. 2 KENTUCKY 78, ALBANY 65
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Jamal Murray poured in a big second half performance to lead No. 2 Kentucky to a 78-65 win over Albany.
The freshman guard scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half, while Derek Willis added a career-best 14 points off the bench in the opener for the Wildcats, who got 12 points and eight rebounds from Marcus Lee and 12 points from Tyler Ulis.
Peter Hooley scored 18 points and Evan Singletary had 17 in the defeat for Albany, which went 1-of-14 from three-point range.
Kentucky shot 56 percent from the floor overall.
NO. 3 MARYLAND 80, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 56
COLLEGE PARK, MD. — Jake Layman shot 7-of-10 from the field and scored 16 points, while Melo Trimble added 14 and No. 3 Maryland beat Mount St. Mary’s 80-56 in their college basketball season opener on Friday night.
Jared Nickens added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Robert Carter (10pts, 8rebs) and Diamond Stone (10 pts, 7rebs) had valuable support for the Terrapins.
BK Ashe scored 18 points and had seven boards for Mount St. Mary’s.
