Day 1: 2018 NCAA Baseball Regional Scores, Results and Highlights

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Scores, result and selected highlights from day one of the 2018 NCAA Baseball Regional tournament on Friday, June 1.

Leading the way was No. 1 overall seed and defending national champion Florida, as well as fellow national seeds North Carolina, Stanford, Arkansas and Oregon State.

However, Florida State, which is No. 7 nationally ranked and top seed at the Tallahassee Regional, suffered a shocking 7-6 defeat to No. 4 seed Samford at Dick Howser Stadium.

This means the Seminoles, who were also beaten in their opening game at last year’s Regional tournament, must play their way back from the loser bracket, starting on Saturday with an elimination game against No. 2 seed Mississippi State noon.

The Bulldogs were out-slugged 20-10 by Oklahoma in Game 1 of the Tallahassee Regional, after the Sooners scored nine runs in the seventh inning to open up a massive lead.

Another shocking result on day one came from the Doak Field in the Raleigh Regional after No. 4 seed Army scored a 5-1 victory over No. 1 seed NC State, which joins Florida State as the top seeds playing elimination games on Saturday.

No. 1 nationally ranked Florida, meanwhile, crushed Columbia in the Gainesville Regional to start the defense of its title on a winning note.

The Gators rolled past the Lions 13-5, with their 13 runs coming from 13 hits on the day. Florida opened up the game in the fourth inning when they scored six unanswered runs.

Oregon State, another strong candidate to win the national title this year, eased past Northwestern State in the second game in the Corvallis Regional, playing at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The No. 1 seed Beavers, who are No. 3 nationally ranked breezed to a 9-3 win over No. 4 seed Demons.

Earlier, second-seeded LSU held off No. 3 seed San Diego State 6-4 in Game 1 at the Corvallis Regional.

Elsewhere, national No. 2 ranked Stanford, the top seed in the Stanford Regional, needed extra innings to see off No. 4 seed Wright State.

The Cardinal were taken to 13 innings before scoring the winning run for a 4-3 victory over the Raiders at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

Also winning in the Stanford Regional was No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton 6, which beat No. 2 Baylor 2 in Game 1.

In other regional tournament results, Arkansas, the No. 1 seed in the Fayetteville Regional, opened with a 10-2 win over Oral Roberts, with freshman outfielder Heston Kjerstad one of the highlighted performers.

No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina hammered No. 4 LIU Brooklyn 16-1 to open its Conway Regional fixtures at Springs Brooks Stadium, No. 1 seed North Carolina defeated No. 4 North Carolina A&T 11-0 in the Chapel Hill Regional at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium, while No. 3 seed Texas A&M scored seven runs in the fourth inning to vault No. 2 Indiana and cruise to a 10-3 victory and moved to the winners bracket in the Austin Regional.

In the meantime, both games in the Oxford Regional were postponed and rescheduled to Saturday because of heavy rain.

No. 3 Missouri State vs. No. 2 Tennessee Tech and No. 4 Saint Louis vs. No. 1 Ole Miss will now be played at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET, respectively and stream live on ESPN3.
