Florida State 45, Ole Miss 34: Francois Leads The Way

ORLANDO, Sporting Alert – AP Top 25 scores and results from the College Football contest between Florida State and Ole Miss on Monday night, September 5.

Down by 22 in the first half, No. 4 Florida State used a stunning 33-0 recovery run to erase the deficit and setup a thrilling 45-34 victory over No. 11 Ole Miss at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, on Labor Day.

The Seminoles came into the contest as heavy favourites, but went behind early in the first quarter, before finding themselves trailing 28-6 with 3:04 left in the first half.

Chad Kelly threw three touchdown passes to Damore’ea Stringfellow, D.K. Metcalf and Evan Engram in the first half to place his team in a solid position before the interval.

However, Deondre Francois also had ideas of his own and the redshirt freshman quarterback did what was necessary to get his team back into the contest.

Francois willingness to trust his line, while standing and deliver, was one of the primary reasons Florida State managed to comeback in the all-AP Top 25 contest.

“He’s a kid who loves his team,” FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said of Francois.

“His teammates believe in him, and he’s a fighter, and he’s a competitor, which I’m very proud of.”

Determined not to go into the break trailing by a wide margin, Francois delivered the key moment of the game when he completed a nine play 75-yard series with a 16-yard pass to Travis Rudolph for a touchdown with 0:28 left in the first half.

From then on, it was all about the fourth-ranked Seminoles, who held the Rebels scoreless in the third quarter before using field goals to finish them off in the fourth.

Francois completed 33 of 52 passes for 419 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while running for another 59 yards to collect a QBR of 77.3.

“Things weren’t going right, but I couldn’t panic because my team needed me behind the wheel,” said Francois.

“So I just kept chopping. We were down 28-6, but I couldn’t let them see me down, I had to portray the image that we were not about to lose this game.”

Running back Dalvin Cook to seven catches for 101 yards and ran for another 91 yards on 23 carries, while Jesus Wilson caught nine passes for 125 yards and Travis Rudolph ended with six catches for 74 yards and a score.

Meanwhile, Kelly threw for 313 yards and four touchdowns for Ole Miss, but the senior also had three interceptions, a fumble and was sacked five times in the defeat for the Rebels.
