Talented freshman Jalen Johnson grabbed an early double-double and the No. 9 Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team heads into the halftime break with a 45-28 lead over Coppin State on Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium in their season opener.
Johnson, who was named to the Preseason All-ACC first team, has already scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on his debut for Duke.
In fact, the freshman forward is perfect from field so far, hitting all six of his shots from the field, including his lone 3-pointer.
DJ Steward is also in double figures in scoring for Duke after making 4 of his 6 shots for 10 points, including two 3-pointers. He also has three rebounds.
Matthew Hurt has so far contributed nine points and five rebounds for the Blue Devils, while fellow sophomore Wendell Moore Jr. has cored five points.
Dejuan Clayton has scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds in the first half for Coppin State, while Kenan Sarvan has eight points for visitors.
Duke has shot 55.9% from the field in the first half and had 10 assists on 19 made baskets during that period.
The game is the season opener for the Blues after their initial campaign opener was canceled. The Blue Devils were scheduled to open Wednesday night against Gardner-Webb but that game was called off, following a positive COVID-19 test within the Gardner-Webb program.
