WEMBLEY, Sporting Alert — The English Premier League Game of the Week turned out to be a one-sided affair after Tottenham sounded their title credentials with a 4-1 thumping of Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
In-form striker Harry Kane punished two early lapses from Dejan Lovren and netted a brace, while Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min each scored a goal for Tottenham as they joined Manchester United in second place in the English Premier League standings (20pts).
Mohamed Salah scored the lone goal for Liverpool in the defeat, as the Spurs set a new attendance record in the Premier League era with a crowd of 80,827 at Wembley Stadium.
KANE PUNISHED MISTAKE-PRONE LIVERPOOL
Kane gave Tottenham the lead after just five minutes when he neatly chipped the ball over Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and kept his balance to fire into the net.
Defender Lovren, who was pulled from the team at halftime, saw his attempt to play offside early in the game backfired after Kane latched on to a through pass from Alli.
Another poor defensive judgment from Lovren led to Tottenham doubling the lead after the center-back’s missed header allowed Kane to gather the ball and squared to Son, who fired first-time beyond Mignolet in the seventh minute.
Eight-minutes after Son clattered the crossbar with a powerful drive, Salah pulled a goal back for Liverpool to make it 2-1 in the 24th minute.
Captain Jordan Henderson found Salah with a first-time pass and the winger managed to get a shot on target before the ball trickled past Hugo Lloris, hit the post and went over the line.
However, Alli made it 3-1 for the home side just before the interval when he volleyed home from 18 yards, following a clearance from Liverpool’s Joel Matip.
Kane wrapped up the scoring in the 56th minute when he pounced first on a Jan Vertonghen’s blocked shot and swept home from close range.
Lloris, who had fine three saves in the game was also in great form for Tottenham and the Frenchman’s stop to deny Philippe Coutinho’s curling effort in the 67th minutes, was simply world-class.
