Kiwis captain Kane Williamson made the correct call on the morning and he opted to put India in the field.
The decision by Williamson was a bit surprising, given that New Zealand have three spinners — Nathan McCullum, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner — included in their starting team today.
Should there be any moisture building up on the pitch from dew later during the game, those spinners could find the going particularly tough bowling second.
As it stands, Adam Milne and Corey Anderson are the only seam bowlers in the team today, which is shocking, as Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Mitchell McClenaghan and Henry Nicholls have all been left out of the squad for the opener.
Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill will open the batting for New Zealand who need to get a good start to justify the captain’s decision to bat first today.
Meanwhile, India have decided to stick with their winning lineup — naming the same XI that won the Asia Cup final.
The top half includes the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and captain and wicketkeeper MS Dhoni who are all capable of blowing up the scoreboard together or individually in T20 cricket.
