MIAMI — Hassan Whiteside collected 25 points and 15 rebounds, and the Miami Heat rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit to beat the Houston Rockets 109-89 in the NBA on Sunday night.
Dwyane Wade had 20 points and eight assists, Luol Deng added 14 and Chris Bosh scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter for Miami, which trailed 65-42 at halftime before turning on their jets in the second half.
In fact, the Heat, which held the Rockets to just 12 points in the third quarter, outscored the travelers 65-26 in the final two-quarters.
Marcus Thornton paced the Rockets with 21 points, with James Harden adding 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals in the defeat.
Harden struggled from the floor after going 2 for 15 overall and 0 for 10 from three-point range.
The defeat in Miami, now sees the Rockets, who played without the injured center Dwight Howard, dropping all three of its opening games this season by exactly 20 points.
THUNDER 117, NUGGETS 93
OKLAHOMA CITY — Kevin Durant scored 25 points and five assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets 117-93 in an NBA game on Sunday night.
Serge Ibaka shot 8 for 13 from the floor and finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, while point guard Russell Westbrook collected 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Oklahoma City, which opened its season 3-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
The victory also helped Thunder head coach Billy Donovan stayed undefeated thus far in his new role.
Danilo Gallinari and Will Barton each scored 15 points and Jameer Nelson added 13 points and seven assists to lead the way for the Nuggets.
Joffrey Lauvergne chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the defeat.
LA LAKERS 103, MAVERICKS 93
LOS ANGELES — Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks held on for a 103-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.
Nowitzki went 10 for 13 from the floor in 30 minutes. He was 3 for 5 from three-pointers.
Zaza Pachulia had 16 points and 12 rebounds, Deron Williams ended with 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds and Raymond Felton also scored 11 points for Dallas.
Julius Randle posted a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds, while adding four assists and four steals to his stats to lead the way for the Lakers.
Kobe Bryant had 15 points, but shot 3 for 15, while Louis Williams added 13 points off the bench in the defeat.
