NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sporting Alert — Goals from John Stones, Raheem Sterling and Brahim Diaz piloted Manchester City to a 3-0 victory over Tottenham in a 2017 International Champions Cup here at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Saturday.
The latest victory was the second impressive outing by Manchester City, following the comfortable 4-1 win over La Liga and European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s side took the lead in the 10th minute when England centre-back Stones headed home past Hugo Lloris from just outside the six-yard box.
Kevin De Bruyne delivered a delightful ball from a set piece in front of 56,232 fans.
De Bruyne sent in a low cross inside the area for Stones to get between four Tottenham defenders and headed home a crouching finish from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner of the goal.
Sterling, who is seen as the odd man out after Guardiola’s spending spree this summer, made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute.
The England forward broke the offside trap, following a through ball pass from Samir Nasri.
Diaz fired home the third goal for Manchester City in the first minute of stoppage time.
An attempted from Nasri was blocked by a Tottenham defender but the ball fell for talented youngster Phil Foden, who saw his attempt saved by Michel Vorm.
The ball then bounced straight at the feet of Diaz, who faked out the keeper to put him on the ground before his easy finish from close range to make it 3-0.
Manchester City could have scored even more goals today with Sergio Aguero hitting the post twice.
Guardiola was delighted with the victory over one of his main rivals for the English Premier League title this coming season, but the City boss isn’t getting too carried away.
However, the Catalan considers Saturday’s performance the best from his Manchester City team since he took over.
“We haven’t dominated like today,” he said. “Last season we were good, but not in 90 minutes like that.
“We cannot forget which team we played.”
Speaking about Tottenham, Guardiola said: “Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Eriksen, one of my favourite players Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Lloris.
“They were the second team last season. ottenham for the most part of the season played the best football.
“Chelsea deserved by far to win the Premier League, but I enjoy a lot to watch Tottenham play football.
“Okay it’s pre-season, but our performance – we didn’t have a performance like that last season.
“Especially the quality and intensity.”
