The Barcelona forward had announced his retirement from international football after another unsuccessful Copa America tournament this past summer, but was persuaded to make a return by new boss Edgardo Bauza and several of his teammates.
Messi will start on the right side of the Argentina attack where he will link up with Paulo Dybala and Ángel Di María in support of striker Lucas Pratto.
