GLENDALE, Ariz., Sporting Alert – Javier Hernández starts for Mexico and Edinson Cavani starts for Uruguay in a Group C Copa America game at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday (5).
Hernandez, who is coming off a fruitful season with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga where he scored 26 goals in all competitions, was also on target in Mexico’s last warmup contest in a 1-0 win over defending Copa America champions Chile.
“We arrive [at the tournament] in a very good moment,” El Tri coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. “With the talent and commitment of the players, combined with the strategy and the way they are carrying out the plans we have decided on, Mexico have a great chance [to win the Copa America].
“This is football and anything can happen, but hopefully the dream of the Mexican public is the same dream of the players. We want it to take us far.”
Jesus Corona, Javier Aquino, Héctor Herrera, Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado and Diego Reyes all start as well for Mexico, which is one of the hot teams in international football at the moment.
Meanwhile PSG forward Cavani will lead the attack for Uruguay, while Diego Godin head things up at the backline.
Alvaro Pereira, Maxi Pereira, Nicolás Lodeiro and Carlos Sánchez, start as well, with Diego Rolan partnering Cavani in the attack.
The last time Mexico and Uruguay battle was in the Copa America tournament in 2011, and the South American edged home to a 1-0 victory.
Uruguay has also won three of the last five head-to-head meetings between the two sides. This is the 20th meeting between the two nations.
Mexico has won eight games in a row and is undefeated in the last 19 games.
LUIS SUAREZ UPDATE
Uruguay will be without leading forward Luis Suarez, who will miss the game with a hamstring injury.
Suarez suffered the injury during Barcelona’s Copa del Rey win over Sevilla last month and isn’t expected to be available until the quarter-finals round.
However, the star forward was seen sprinting during practice on Saturday and is way ahead of his listed return schedule.
Mexico: Alfredo Talavera, Héctor Moreno, Diego Reyes, Miguel Layún, Néstor Araújo, Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado, Héctor Herrera, Jesus Corona, Javier Aquino, Javier Hernández.
Uruguay: Fernando Muslera, Diego Godín, José Giménez, Egidio Arévalo, Álvaro Pereira, Maxi Pereira, Nicolás Lodeiro, Matías Vecino, Carlos Sánchez, Diego Rolan, Edinson Cavani
