———-

Messi starts alongside Gonzalo Higuaín and Ezequiel Lavezzi, who gets the nod over Sergio Aguero as a replacement for Nicolas Gaitan.

Gerardo Martino has decided to go with the pace of Lavezzi in the starting lineup, with Aguero starting on the bench along with Angel Di Maria.

Javier Mascherano, Ever Banega and Augusto Fernández start in the field, with Ramiro Funes Mori, Nicolás Otamendi, Marcos Rojo and Gabriel Mercado in the backline. Sergio Romero starts in goal.

Meanwhile, DeAndre Yedlin returns for USA to play in the backline and replaced Matt Besler.

Kyle Beckerman, Graham Zusi and Chris Wondolowski also come into the starting lineup for the expelled Bobby Wood, Alejandro Bedoya and Jermaine Jones.

The last time USA and Argentina met in the Copa America tournament La Albiceleste’s ran away 4-1 winners in 2007.

Their last two meetings, however, ended in draws, and USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann believes his team can get past Messi and the world No. 1 ranked side. The German also thinks his side can win the Copa America.

“There’s no reason at all why we can’t win Copa America,” he said. “We travelled the world the last few years to very difficult friendly games all over Europe and in Mexico and we came away with wins.

“We surprised a lot of people — no one gave us a chance to get out of the group in Brazil [at the World Cup]. We left Portugal behind, we left Ghana behind.

“Dream big — why not? This is about two more games.”

The winner of this contest will take on Colombia in the semifinals, after Jame Rodriguez and the South Americans defeated Peru on penalties on Friday night.

Mexico and Chile met earlier this month, with El Tri picking up a 1-0 victory in a friendly international game.

But despite that results, and the fact that they are picked as the slight favourites, midfielder Hector Herrera has warned his Mexico teammates about being too complacent.

“The match against Chile served both teams,” Herrera said. “Now it will be a completely different game.”

In team news, Javier Chicharito Hernandez, Hector Herrera, Andrés Guardado, Jesus Corona and Hirving Lozano all start for Mexico.

However, captain and veteran centre-back Rafael Márquez is only on the bench tonight, with Héctor Moreno, Néstor Araújo, Miguel Layún and Paul Aguilar starting in the backline.

Márquez, having returned from home for the birth of his son less than 24 hours ago, will not go from the start.

Guillermo Ochoa gets the starting nod in goal ahead of Alfredo Talavera for the champions of CONCACAF.

For Chile, meanwhile, Claudio Bravo, Gary Medel, Jean Beauséjour, Marcelo Díaz, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez and Eduardo Vargas are all starters for Chile, which finished second to Argentina in group play.

Mexico starting XI: Ochoa; Aguilar, Araujo, Moreno, Layun; Dueñas, Guardado, Herrera; Lozano, Chicharito, Tecatito

Chile: Bravo, Jara, Medel, Beauséjour, Fuenzalida, Díaz, Vidal, Aránguiz, Puch, Sánchez, Vargas

Argentina Rolls Into Copa America Quarterfinals

SEATTLE, Sporting Alert – Argentina cruised into the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa America, after thrashing Bolivia 3-0 in the final group match of the tournament on Tuesday night.

First half goals from Erik Lamela, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Victor Cuesta piloted the world’s No. 1 team to the comfortable victory, as the South Americans went on to secure top spot in Group D of the Copa America.

Lamela got the ball rolling when his free-kick was deflected off the wall and slipped in past Carlos Lampe in the 13th minute.

Two minutes later, the score was double, as forward Ezequiel Lavezzi fired home a right footed shot from very close range, after Sergio Aguero’s header was blocked.

Lavezzi then turned provider for Cuesta to score his first international goal for Argentina – guiding home a teasing cross played into the six-yard-box from the right side.

Captain Lionel Messi was introduced to the game at halftime and the Barcelona forward, although not scoring, had an entertaining second half, which closed a little choppy.

The earlier game in Group D saw Chile rallied from a goal down to beat Panama 4-2 to finish second and move on to play Mexico in the quarterfinals.

Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas each had a brace for the defending champion, while Miguel Camargo and Abdiel Arroyo scored for Panama, which was without four starters due to suspension and injuries.

Argentina is the only team to win all three of the group stage games this year and will hope to keep that form in the search of its first major international championship since winning this tournament in 1993.

The Copa America tournament will be on an off day on Wednesday, but will resume with the knockout round on Thursday.

A draw or victory in the final group play will earn a knockout slot for Chile, which is on course to face Mexico in the quarterfinals.

However, star midfielder Arturo Vidal, who netted the winner from the penalty spot in the win over Bolivia in the 2-1 win last time out, wants all three points on Tuesday night, adding that the champs need to start improving if they want to defend the title from 2015.

“Panama are physically very strong. We are going to better prepare for the game and hopefully will be able to show all the quality we have,” Vidal said.

“These matches are very difficult, you have to keep improving – starting now.”

Vidal is among the starters on Tuesday night, with Eduardo Vargas and Marcelo Díaz among the three players returning to the lineup.

Alexis Sanchez, Mauricio Isla, Gary Medel, Jean Beauséjour, Gonzalo Jara and Claudio Bravo are all in the XI as well for the opening 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, Panama’s selection has been hampered by injuries and suspension, with Felipe Baloy, Armando Cooper and Blas Perez all out with second yellow cards at the tournament, while Anibal Godoy was sent off in the 5-0 defeat to Argentina the last time out.

They will look to midfielder Alberto Quintero to carry the team tonight.

The other game on the night will see Argentina and Lionel Messi facing Bolivia at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

Jamaica v Uruguay TV Channels; Lineups

By:MARK SMITH | CARIBBEAN CONTRIBUTOR Published on: June 13, 2016 10:09 pm Leave a Comment

SANTA CLARA, CA, Sporting Alert – Rudolph Austin is back from suspension, but starts on the bench for Jamaica in tonight’s Copa America Centenario Group C finale against Uruguay at Levi’s Stadium.

Jamaica v Uruguay TV Channels Game Time: 10:20 pm ET

Both teams are already eliminated from this year’s tournament, after losing their previous two group games, but they would like to finish the competition on a high.

Austin, who was sent off in the opening group game defeat against Venezuela, and the Mexico loss, is available again to play, but the midfielder and captain will watch the opening minutes from the bench.

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez, who missed the first two games of the tournament, is not even on the bench tonight for Uruguay, as he is apparently still not fit enough.

The Barcelona forward was disappointed about not being able to help his team fight for a knockout place, and expressed his anger for everyone to see.

Suarez, who went to warm up with the rest of the substitutes without knowing that he wasn’t even in the match day squad, said he felt helpless in the loss, which clearly showed by his actions on the bench.

“I want to clarify many things that have been said and are untrue,” Suarez told a news conference. “I am not even at 90 percent of what I can give.

“The anger comes from the helplessness of not being able to do anything and seeing that we were being eliminated.

“It has nothing to do with the coach or anything with the coaching staff.”

Tonight, Edinson Cavani will get his third strike partner with Abel Hernández getting the nod upfront.

Diego Godín, Maxi Pereira, Egidio Arévalo, Nicolás Lodeiro and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera all start as well for the South Americans.

English Premier League winner Wes Morgan heads up the backline for Jamaica, which is still looking for the first ever Copa America point.

Uruguay: Fernando Muslera, Diego Godín, José Giménez, Gastón Silva, Maxi Pereira, Álvaro González, Egidio Arévalo, Nicolás Lodeiro, Carlos Sánchez, Edinson Cavani, Abel Hernández

Jamaica: Andre Blake, Jermaine Taylor, Wes Morgan, Je-Vaughn Watson, Adrian Mariappa, Michael Hector, Lee Williamson, Jobi McAnuff, Garath McCleary, Giles Barnes, Clayton Donaldson

HOUSTON, Sporting Alert – Mexico and Venezuela will battle for the top spot in Group C of the Copa America tournament in Houston on Monday night.

Watch Live Streaming On Fox Soccer 2Go | Follow Live Commentary

Both nations are locked on six points each after winning both their opening games in the group stage, but will go in search of a third victory, as they seek to avoid a possible quarterfinals clash with top-ranked Argentina.

Influential midfielder Andres Guardado returns to starting lineup for Mexico after missing the win over Jamaica because of a suspension for a red card against Uruguay in the group opener.

The return of Guardado, who captain’s the team tonight, gives El Tri a quality advantage in the midfield, with Paul Aguilar, Hector Herrera and the Manchester United linked Hirving Lozano also starting in the middle as well.

Star striker Javier Hernandez is on the bench to start this game, with Javier Aquino and Oribe Peralta leading the attack.

Also resting from the start tonight is captain and leading centre-back Rafael Marquez, as Hector Moreno, Diego Reyes, Jesus Molina and Jorge Torres start in the backline.

Venezuela picked up 1-0 wins over Jamaica and Uruguay in their two group openers and could be a big test for Mexico.

Without a doubt, their performance has been one the tournament’s surprise for many, but Mexico’s Peralta wasn’t too shocked, as he always believed they had enough quality.

Among the starters tonight for Venezuela are Alejandro Guerra and Christian Santos, but West Bromwich forward Salomon Rondon is on the bench.

Venezuela Team: Daniel Hernandez, Jose Velazquez, Wilker Angel, Rolf Feltscher, Alexander Gonzalez, Luis Seijas, Tomas Rincon, Adalberto Penaranda, Alejandro Guerra, Christian Santos

Mexico Team: Jose Corona, Hector Moreno, Diego Reyes, Jesus Molina, Jorge Torres, Paul Aguilar, Andrés Guardado, Hector Herrera, Hirving Lozano, Javier Aquino, Oribe Peralta

Brazil Crashes Out Of Copa America

By:Ben Rummage | Staff Writer Published on: June 12, 2016 11:36 pm Leave a Comment

FOXBOROUGH, Mass., Sporting Alert – Brazil crashed out of the 2016 Copa America Centenario tournament after losing 1-0 to Peru in the final group match on Sunday (12).

Embed from Getty Images

The controversial goal came in the 75th after it appears that Raul Ruidiaz handled the ball in assisting it into the back of the net.

After a long delay, which saw the referee and his assistants meeting for six minutes to get help from the technical staff, the goal, which was initially disallowed, was changed back to stand, despite replays clearly showed that Ruidiaz guided the ball into the goal with his right hand.

With the win, Peru moved up to top Group B and will face Colombia in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Brazil, one of the pre-Copa America tournament favourites, are eliminated.

It was the first time Peru were beating Brazil in 31 years and the final result could cost Brazil coach Dunga his job, as it is understood that his minimum requirement was the qualify the five-time World Cup champions for the final.

He was furious.

“I am sure the Brazilian fans saw the game and saw how Brazil was eliminated,” Dunga said.

“There is no way to anticipate imponderables. The team was not eliminated by anything to do with football.”

“I do not quite understand who or what the referee was consulting,” he said.

“It was such a clear handball, but we have no influence over the referee.”

Meanwhile, despite the clear handball incident, which was brought to light by multiple replays from several different angles, and the fact that his side was outplayed by Brazil for most of the game, Peru coach Ricardo Gareca insisted they deserved the win.

“I thought we did enough to deserve to win,” Gareca said.

“I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve heard some comments. But I never think too much about mistakes by officials,” he added.

This means Clint Dempsey, Bobby Wood and Gyasi Zardes will continue to lead the attack, while the experienced in the midfield remains, as captain Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones will anchor things behind the attackers.

Alejandro Bedoya also starts in midfield, with John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Fabian Johnson and DeAndre Yedlin completing the back four.

Brad Guzan remains the starting goalkeeper, with the veteran Tim Howard on the bench.

The U.S. only need a draw to secure a place in the quarterfinal round, but head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said his team will be going for a win.

“A point will take you into the quarters, but you can’t speculate on that one,” Klinsmann said at his pre-match news conference at Lincoln Financial Field this week.

“We don’t have the character to now sit back and let them come and just hope for a counter break. This is not us.”

The German added: “This is already a knockout game on Saturday. This is it. You need now to get at least one point.

“We are not playing for one point. We cannot do that. It is not our character to go for one point. We go for the win. Otherwise, we might punish ourselves.”

Meanwhile, Paraguay, currently on one point, need a victory in the group stage finale, and they are preparing to take some risk against the host country.

“We’re going to take the risks that we have to,” said defender Paulo da Silva. “Especially in the first half.”

Da Silva will start alongside Fabián Balbuena, Miguel Samudio and Gustavo Gómez in the backline for Paraguay, with the Derlis González, Dario Lezcano and Antonio Sanabria, Celso Ortiz, Víctor Ayala and Miguel Almirón also playing in the starting lineup.
