NO. 18 SMU 105, HAMPTON 72

DALLAS — Jordan Tolbert collected another double-double, and No. 18 SMU erupted in the second half en route to a 105-72 win over Hampton on Thursday night in a college basketball top 25 score.

Tolbert poured in 20 points and 19 rebounds against Hampton — picking up from the 18 points and career-high 23 rebounds he collected in a one-sided victory over Nicholls State on Wednesday night.

Sterling Brown added 23 points, six rebounds and three steals, Nic Moore finished with 18 points and eight assists and Ben Moore flirted with a triple-double after ending with 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Mustangs (9-0) to remain undefeated this season.

SMU was also registering its highest-scoring outing in five years, while the club is off to its best start since opening the 1997-98 season with a 10-0 record.

Quinton Chievous and Brian Darden each scored 18 points for Hampton, which was outscored 62-31 in the second after trailing by just two points (43-41) going into the halftime break.

Reginald Johnson had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Pirates (4-4) who were blown away in the last 15-minutes of the second half.

Guard Shake Milton had 14 points and five assists and Jarrey Foster grabbed 14 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win for SMU, which is ineligible for postseason competition this season.

The night also marked the conclusion of head coach Larry Brown nine-game suspension for NCAA violations. The Mustangs were guided through the first nine games by assistant head coach Tim Jankovich.


CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In another NCAA basketball top 25 score on Thursday, No. 20 West Virginia used a big second half as well to pull away from Marshall and secured an 86-68 victory.

Jevon Carter scored 15 points and five rebounds and Daxter Miles Jr. added 14 points and five steals for the Mountaineers (9-1) who outrebounded Marshall 48-32.

Elijah Macon scored 12 points and Tarik Phillip ended with 11 for West Virginia, which used a 16-1 run early in the second half to take charge of the contest.

Ryan Taylor scored 15 points and six rebounds to lead Marshall, with Jon Elmore adding 14 points, and James Kelly ending with 11 for the Thundering Herd (3-7) who shot 34-percent from the field.


In scores outside the NCAA basketball top 25, Stony Brook eased to an 86-68 win over American, Norfolk State topped Evansville 84-70 and North Texas beat Mississippi Valley State 87-74.
